Just wow: http://www.aol.com/article/2014/01/31/a-penny-inside-mans-desk-drawer-could-be-worth-250k/20820718/
Comments: "jguss69 less than a minute ago never heard of aluminum pennys , metal ones during wwII and there worth nothing"
Okay, now where the heck did they get a figure of $250k on such a coin? Sounds like a shot in the dark as there are no previous auction sales of said example. Sometimes, not putting an estimate on such rarities will do more good, but spilling a hypothetical number like that might do more harm by setting an "expectation" level that might be too high or low.
The estimate was from the exec. VP at Heritage where the coin will be sold, but you're right, there's no auction records to compare it to, so I would think that the estimate is an educated guess based on the opinion of experts and the coins rarity. The article in the OP has a couple errors and leaves out many facts. Here's an article from Numismaster that I feel does a much better job reporting the facts. http://numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=27601&et_mid=658552&rid=238176646 Jesse
Close, MS63. (Unless I missed something) http://www.pcgs.com/News/pcgs-certifies-first-confirmed-1974d-aluminum-cent
This article has several things missing, the most glaring is that the "mass produced" 1974 Lincolns weren't produced at Denver. Read another discussion here: http://www.cointalk.com/threads/new-discovery-1974-d-aluminum-cent.241870/
I was going to say the same thing - and I just finished reading the thread. Is it possible that there are multiple threads and you're getting your trigger's crossed? What's the provenance prior to Randy Lawrence's father? If he got it in a way that established title, that's one thing. Otherwise, I'd be leery of the SS on this one.
Umm, the thread I posted a link to. This one:http://www.cointalk.com/threads/new-discovery-1974-d-aluminum-cent.241870/
I'm on a phone and I didn't see any of the comments when I asked that. I would say "I'm sorry" and apologize for taking up your valuable time and then "thank you" for your comment, but I'm sure you know by now that's not gonna happen.
Someone with deep pockets will pay more than the stated amount, just because, they want to be the owner of such a coin. It may be the only one, that will see the day of light for sometime. It may be a one of a kind, or not. Time will tell.
Well then I must be the one to apologize. I didn't know the circumstances, all I knew is that hours before there was a link to first, and most informative, of three discussions. So anyhow, sorry that I offended you. P.S. I see the designers of whatever software your phone is using need to step up their game. Not being able to see comments is a major defect.
IMO since this didn't make it into circulation it can't even be considered a coin; nor a pattern or token, that's something else. I can't even understand how PCGS graded it as a coin since it's just a piece of metal that never had any monetary value. It will probably sell for huge money but to me it's not worth 20 bucks.
