I agree. These shouldn't be allowed to be sold on eBay. they are misleading even when the sellers make it clear that are not pure gold. What bothers me the most is when I am searching eBay for a deal I have to go through pages and pages of this garbage to find something I am interested in. I know people can sell what ever they want as long as they are being honest, but who really wants these? They are generic and worthless in my opinion.
This is very much different than someone selling counterfeit coins as genuine, and you know it. Just as we've discussed every other time you've brought this up: yes, this is deceptive, and yes, this is in very poor taste, but as long as ebay allows such listings, there is nothing you can do about it. If someone actually thinks they bought an ounce of gold for as little as $3, they got what they deserve.
There are so many naive people out there, but its true. If you really think you scored an oz of gold for $10 then you deserve to lose that money.
Just don't sell authentic DPR Korea stuff, they did go after some sellers for selling stuff from there lately.
I actually like these collectible bars, and they would make a fine addition to my collection. Thanks for the links Detecto!
I don't think anyone on eBay is getting duped, but if these bars get into the wrong hands, then fraud can occur.
While I think it takes a special kind of shady person to sell stuff like this, it isnt' illegal, nor is it against FeeBay's rules. But, these auctions are still interesting to look at. I find it particularly interesting that the seller identifies these as gold clad, but at the same time is hyping up gold as an investment. Given that these are clad, the styrofoam packing peanuts in the package are probably worth more than the gold. Also, he says a few times these bars are one ounce, 28 grams. But later in the auction he says "Bars weigh in at a full one troy ounce each."
Unfortunately all you can do is report him but he does state that the bar is layered in 24k gold, so I kinda doubt that ebay is gonna give a care. It's not really a fake gold bar but I know what you're saying.
And there are countless other ways fraud can occur, but if someone is going to put themselves into a situation where they can get ripped off, there is nothing anyone can do about it. There are also countless legitimate ways for people to acquire genuine metals, but because of a perceived deal or whatever other reason they do not take the safe route, it was their choice.
There are legitimate purposes for these bars. They can be stored in a dummy safe to make thieves feel they scored and leave.
BS! Exonouma is a legit category and you're obviously clueless to what it is. Ever heard of the Franklin Mint, Danbury Mint or Highland? The buffalo 5 nickel is a prime example. A Gold clad replica from NTM. There is nothing wrong selling these if they are represented as a Exonumic piece opposed to a Numismatic investment. This is a CLOSE example of fraud as the REAL coin actually exists as a numismatic investment. As for the German Bar. Nothing ever did exist that could be viewed as an original piece. That is metallic art, Exonumia. Nothing more nothing less. COUNTERFEIT bullion is illegal and that is what ebays policy is there to enforce. Not a novelty. That German bar is a NOVETY and if you're duped by it you should stay away from Bullion period. Their are currently over 127,000 items sold in ebays exonumia catagory with over a dozen sub categories. Ever since APMEX partnered with ebay in January 2013, and now that they're in bed together, Exonumia is under attack. APMEX, PNG, and other grading companies would like to rid ebay of Exonumia altogether because they can't profit from it. I suppose that cubic Zirconia and costume jewelry should be disallowed too. As Tiffanies will not profit either. CZ's could actually be mistaken for a diamond, even by the educated. Not the case with your example. Funny how that link redirects to Bullion sold by APMEX and Scottsdale on ebay instead of exonumia isn't it? Now that the road has been cleared by ebay for APMEX to be a partner, fools like you will be paying 25% over spot on gold and silver. Anyone buying precious metals on ebay is paying way more then they should and it is that that should be banned.
Buying precious metals on ebay is like paying MSRP plus simply because people are uneducated on how precious metals SHOULD be purchased. Try to tell APMEX and EBAY that they should cap the bid on bullion bids to 10% over spot (which is still ludicrous) to be fair to their customers and see how far that gets you. There's a sucker born every minute, APMEX and Ebay know it too.
So ban the franklin mint, Danbury mint and highland? Cubic Zirconia, costume jewelry ? Try searching under PRECIOUS metals / bullion, not Exonumia.
If OP is trying to purchase bullion on ebay he should be duped. Only fools buy precious metals on ebay. Well fools and those wanting to pay ridiculous premiums over spot. It's amazing that people think they can get a steal on commodity traded precious metals UNDER spot just because they bought it on ebay. Hilarious!
Rich. Your trying to talk sense into to OP Is like talking to a rock. He just doesn't listen and his main goal in life is to have someone (is: government) to protect everyone from themselves and the evil rich. If you need a good laugh you can look for the thread where he sent a cease and disist letter to the Franklin mint
