I did not bid on this slabbed trade dollar; good decision or not?

1877-S TRADE DOLLAR ANACS GRADED AU 50

It went for US $168.99 [43 bids] with $3.75 shipping.

I am staying away from unslabbed trade dollars. I only saw this one a few hours ago and did not have time to research it.

Did the buyer get a good deal?

I'm no expert but I payed $350 for similar trade dollar in au 50 PCGS 9 months ago at a coin show for my type set. when I was doing my research/searching they went about 300/350.

If he likes the coin, that is all that matters.

The one in the OP was an ANACS AU50 Details grade.

I don't think you missed out on much. The price looks about right.

eBay completed auction history shows only 3 other slabbed AU50's that actually sold (1 PCGS, 2 NGC) and they went for $250-$300.

(And I realize that ANACS does not bring as much in an auction as NGC or PCGS, but is it really *that* much less?)

Every coin is differnt. buy the coin not the slab. the coin you posted was cleaned, the others were not

Slabbed but not labeled as cleaned? What gives?

I *saw* what looked like hairline scratches, but since it was slabbed, I thought it must be something else.

The real problem with trying to tell if it was a good deal or not is that the poor photos keep you from being able to tell how badly the coin was cleaned. It could still be a very attractive coin and so a good deal, or under all that glare from the plastic it could be a heavily hairlined off color disaster

Cleaned is one thing harshly / Improplerly cleaned another I've seen coins labeled details cleaning in a pcgs slab due to glossiness from dipping I've others labeled cleaned that look like a belt sander was taken to them even if detailS buy the coin not the slab but rely on the slab in the case of trades as a label of authenticity unless of course it a fake slab too

Better you skip on something that is detailed without decent pics to let you know how bad or good the coin looks . Still not a bad price unless it was cleaned with a Brillo pad .

I think you were correct to stay out of the bidding. No one has mentioned it yet, or maybe I missed it, but not only is it a cleaned coin, but I really question the grade. Maybe an XF example, but surely not AU!
