Do you think 2009 pennys will someday become as valuable as 1909 cents? And is it worth hoarding??

I agree that any coin out there in a high mintage number is a bad investment. It seems like the price is highest the first year it's offered as people who want the coin compete for it and the price goes down from there at least for a while. Best to wait for 5 years or so until the price stabilized, but that's hard to do for many especially if you like the coin. You buy with the assumption that you can buy more later at a cheaper price. The coin in my avatar has a mintage of 300 and I think that one will be a good investment.

Although the circulation issues are not overall low mintage, they are low for a modern one cent coin - the Presidency being the lowest. Sine they are fairly inexpensive, I put a few rolls of each away, if for nothing else, to cherrypick for higher grades and doubled dies.

The mint set issues are also still fairly inexpensive for much lower mintage coins, which unlike most other years, are not the same coins made for circulation, so these may be good ones to put away as well. Then there are the proofs, much higher mintage than the mint set coins, but still much lower than circulation strikes.

What are the differences between mint set coins and circulation coins (besides the obvious uncirc vs. circ. condition of each)?

The 2009 mint set coins have a satin finsh, as do the mint sets produced from 2005 through 2010. Also, the 2009 cents in the mint set are made of bronze (95% copper), the same compositions as the 1909 cents - the circulation strikes are copper plated zinc.

I got a couple proof sets in PF70, the uncirculated/mint set from the mint and some rolls for the three of the four time periods. I couldn't get the birthplace rolls and they were the most valuable if I can remember. I starting collecting again around 2008 and the Lincoln cents were my reintroduction to coins. These days it's mainly low mintage world coins but still buy some US designs I like.

I put away copper pennies. I just feel it's the 'only' modern-ish thing I can do that has a slight chance of being ahead of the curve...
