Hello all! I am super excited to be apart of this forum and being an amateur coin an bullion collector, I am very eager to jump into this fascinating new world. Are these two 50 Reichspfennig and one 5 Reichmark real or fake? The two 50 Reichspfennig feel light in weight where as the Reichsmark feels substantially heavier. Thank you for your help! 50 Reichspfenning 1 50 Reichspfenning 2 5 Reichmark
There's no reason to think they aren't real. The 50 pfennigs are aluminum which is why they're so light. Unless one of these is a key date that I'm not aware of, there's no need for someone to make a fake version. There are millions of Third Reich coins floating around.
I did not pay very much for them, do you think it would it be a good idea to get them graded by the PCGS or NGC? I know that there is a far bigger market for US coins than world coins that are graded and their value goes up some too.
They look real to me. I don't think any of them would grade because they all have bene harshly cleaned, so I would not submit them. None are key dates. The 50pf coins are aluminum which is why they are so light. The 5RM is 90% silver.
Actually there IS a slight possibility that the 5 mark is fake; 1936-J is the 4th best date in the series of 25 different dates and mints, KM #94, ranging from $12 in fine to $100 in uncirculated, mintage only 640,000 and many long since melted down as bullion. That said, this example looks OK to me, I have 6 different dates/mints. For the 50 pfennig, both the 1939-D and 1939-E are better dates, but not to the extent that the 5 mark is a better date, however. If they are cast fakes, that would account for the fact that they look exactly alike in tone, surface, and coloration, and, look scrubbed clean.
I would buy them already graded instead of sending them to a TPG. Those are common coins which can be found on eBay every weekend. I sent only a couple of RM to NGC as they were outstanding in terms of condition and eye appeal.
I see no reason to think this coin is fake. Even though it is lower mintage, these coins are not nearly as heavily collected as US coins and 640,000 really isn't rare. I'd say there really isn't a rare KM 94 issue.
