Earlier about 2 years ago I posted that I had bought a 1795 $ from Robert Hughes at a show and never had a problem with him. About one year later he burned me in a serious way. I paid for an expensive coin over 5 months only to find he didn't have the coin at the time of pay-off He used the coin to secure a personal loan for himself. I hired a lawyer filed suit and during discovery made him tell us what happened to the coin. We contacted the family and I had to settle for my final pay-off plus $17,500.00 in addition. I got lucky.

In 3 years, you have posted 2 times, both claiming to be ripped off by this guy. First of all thanks for your contributions to the forum over the years. Second, when doing business with someone, you should have a legal contract. This way you can protect yourself. Chalk it up as a lesson learned.

With or without a contract you don't win here. Just ask somebody. Since I paid using bank wires, the proof of payment was never in question. Finding the coin was the question, hoping that it could be found and would be able to claim first rights on the coin. (which we did) A contract cannot help you if the intent is to sell the same coin to multiple buyers or use it to secure a personal loan. With first rights the owner of the coin could not re-sell the coin and had to come to the table to address our claim.

with a contract, it should be a slam dunk in court. oh well, you win some, you lose some.

If only you knew this guy. Ask somebody whom has personally dealt with him.

I remember a little talk I had at his table a couple of years ago, I knew he was a big ebay seller and I asked whether they made much profit there, they said "no". I also remember him sharing a business office at a hotel where the coin show was held where he was sweating bullets and looked agitated. I would venture to say some coin dealers need much better oversight or business managers as cases like this show. I wonder whether the report of a seizure of some of Mr. Hughes inventory at the FUN show I read about on the PCGS site is connected to the grievance mentioned in this thread.

I have not seen the PCGS article, However, I will look for it. As far as the oversight or business managers are concerned with coin dealers, my personal experience is most coin dealers are very fair and forthright, remembering they do have to make a profit in an underfunded industry. Policing their own, they should, most people who are new to the industry rely mainly on a trusted coin dealer's expertise. When they run into the Robert Hughes of the coin industry, their mind are polluted with mistrust and a buyer beware attitude toward coin dealers. It pleases me to hear of the seizure of his inventory at the fun show. I only wonder what took them so long.

Trust is a big word. I don't ever recall saying I trust him. I spoke with a few prominent coin dealers whom gave him the nod and he has burned them as of today. I purchased several major rarities ( Coins) at wholesale prices. He was selling and I was buying, each time consulting with my sources. Considering the source, I made a decision and for the most part. I am pleased with my purchases.
