I haven't seen any in hand either , I don't collect Bust dollars but do collect Bust halves by Overton # and have collected Trade dollars for awhile . I just looked at the Trade dollars that Numistat posted a link to in post # 25 . They didn't look all that great to me , maybe I'm missing something though , could you take a look at a few Trade dollars if you have the time and let us know what you think .

    I
I just looked at some of the ones he posted and they all jumped at me something was wrong a lot of them I can't totally pinpoint what is wrong but the overall feel is wrong a lot of it for me is just gut reaction and an eye trained to spot problems and fakes in early American furniture which has been faked and reworked since trade dollars were minted new in furniture sometimes the giveaway is the grain of the wood is wrong or doesn't match which most people wouldn't catch in the coins I'd say they can't seem to get the exact lines depth of strike and relief of the images just exactly right is not nessicarily something that can be measured but my eye sees it and this screen I'm looking at isn't very good either is why I'll only buy from a respected dealer or auction house without examining in hand

The dealer had close to 100 trade dollars. TONS of them... mostly problem coins.

Maybe so, but if you have a coin that multiple experts have looked at and all of them have declared it to be genuine...what is it? Genuine right? But what if that piece is actually a fake but no one knows this and can't find anything wrong with it so they all declare it genuine? What is it? Still a fake? Unless you made it, or know the person who made that specific piece, or God come down and whispers in your ear that it's a fake, all you can go on is the opinion of the experts and they all say it is real.

Conder , that's why I said if it ever comes to that this hobby will probably die . If nobody can tell if real or fake and the Chinese start turning out millions of these which they probably have already , I'll start collecting something else . But like the Omega gold fakes there will be tell tale signs that each fake will inherit from the original coin used to make them . All we can do is try to learn and try to keep them out by asking our congressman and government to petition the Chinese to stop this junk where it originates . China . I've written my congressman 2 times already and will do so again . I tell them I won't vote for them if they do nothing .

Case in point when so many people believe their fakes they bought are real when their convinced they convince others and the problem spreads and takes over like kudzu best defense is to study and educate yourself and keep learning no matter how much you think you know there's always more to learn me I'm a sponge I'm always looking to learn something that I didn't know just wish I remembered things like I did 20 years ago

Somehow I doubt that unfortunately for too many is about quantity not quality

I agree with you although that fake is a casting of a real die pair. here is a basic information chart I drew up that helps with some fakes.

Can anyone tell me why they call the the eagles claw to our right the sinister claw ?

It goes back to the "coat of arms" days referring to the left hand side from the bearer's perspective. But basically it stems from the Latin word for left.

Fancy way to say the (eagle's left claw) indifferent of others perspective

And "dexter" is to the eagle's, or rather the arms-bearer's, right.
