I do wish we had robo-moderators , it would allow the human moderators more time to enjoy coins and researching them. My first few years, I averaged 2000 posts a year. As a moderator, it is about 600-800, with about 1/3 moderator posts. I am sure that some members think moderators are power hungry pains in the neck, not allowing them to act as anonymous people could on the internet. Believe me I have many other hobbies and interests. So why do I volunteer for a non-paying position? Besides the other great staff members, there are many more wonderful, thoughtful members who do their best to educate and welcome the new members and provide a safe forum for them to participate and learn. Peter and Doug have provided guidance with the rules to do just this. Yes, there are others who feel that there should be free run, and that rules or inclinations should not apply to some one as cool as they are. That is why there are moderators.

I'd say there is a slight difference between "strict, hip and up to date" moderating vs. "geriatric ward rules, geriatric mentality and often zero grasp on reality" moderating.

For the most part, I've noticed that the guys without any authority on this forum, are great, know how to take and tell a joke, know how to turn the other cheek, don't get upset easily, can hold their own in an argument, etc. This potentially leaves the abundance of grumpy old moderators (or younger moderators enforcing grumpy old rules), fishing for what most would consider non-existent problems. I sometimes wonder why things even required the involvement of a moderator.

I'm still pretty new and doing my best to adapt, especially with that whole entire freedom of speech thing you guys have going in the US. I'll figure it out, eventually.

    In a word, yes.;)

I've also seen more than a handful of posts that I thought break the rules, left unquestioned. The response there is for me to report them. Why would I report a fellow CT member, with this many moderators always looking to give public pointers and lectures in red? Sorry, not my style. I prefer a community without rats.

Let's hope that no volunteer authority figures, ever wake up in a safe, soft room with tennis balls mounted on all sharp corners, sitting near the window, doing their best to prevent the sunset. For me, guessing and prevention of what one thinks might happen next, falls along the lines of one of those -isms, maybe with a McCarthy in front of it.

It takes a special person to be the hall monitor, especially for free. Cheers for all the good calls. My problem with authority, especially authority on a pretend level, is deep-rooted. If it ever results in a ban, I'll have to learn to live with myself.;)

My My. Peter owns the site, pays the expenses, takes care of its functioning, provides a service for you and I , who by the way, frequent regularly. All he asks is to obey his rules for the site. SO if you see a private home in Canada, do you just open the door, ignore the no smoking, take off your shoes signs, no religion or politics discussed signs, keep your voice down as babies are sleeping sign, no vulgar language, you feel that you can do this anyway? Not even knowing the people, Why? The rules here are very simple, they just aren't your rules, so you feel they shouldn't really apply, since you think they are ""geriatric ward rules, geriatric mentality and often zero grasp on reality".

Temper, temper, I'm sure Peter would have worded it less aggressively. Sometimes, if the dog guarding your house turns rabid and aggressive for no reason, what do you do?

If Peter is inviting guests to his very cool PUBLIC (not private) house, is it so that they get barked at and bitten for no reason?

Based upon the condition of the rim, my vote is for weakly struck through grease.

Just a matter of comparing thickness and weight, to a regular shield penny. I still think it's a split planchet, prior to strike. Otherwise, that would be a lot of grease.

Au contraire mon ami... after participating in a number of online coin forums over the years, I have nothing but praise for the moderators of this site. The ancient gang having so much fun in their subforum would agree with me. The moderators here really are hands-off, unless absolutely necessary, and warnings are norm, not an instant thread deletion or lockdown, or banning of members without knowing what even happened... for that I am grateful.

    Your time is greatly appreciated.

PS - what is that crystal in your avatar?? Tanzanite??

It's not a split planchet. Looks like a grease filled die.

The Kennedy half is not close enough for comparison, much nicer example. The Ike is pretty bad, never seen a strike through that much grease. The only thing that remains, is the texture of the planchet. The cent looks different, doesn't it? Ah, you're probably right. What would a modern day cent look like anyway, if it split ...?
