I had these pictures for a while of a 1970 cent didnt know what this was but I think this might also be a dropped letter cent but this looks doubled. the cent is not in the best condition but what do You think? http://coins.about.com/od/errorcoin...rror-Photos/Embossed-Not-Dropped-Letter-1.htm
I like to bring my coins to the local coin shows, potter there, jim from coneca, its free of charge to have theses guys look at coins, at least at the shows, maybe jim will show-up, and help with this one, hell, maybe mike diamond too, heres what I've been doing the last couple of weeks, two frozen pipes, in the ceil, big time insurance damage, o-happy days, thats for sure
this is not from a dropped letter. another dollar coin has been banged into this one really hard to do this.
You've been on a roll lately Tommy! Congrats! Rick, the Grant is quite nice also! There have been some cool and interesting coins on Coin Talk recently. Thanks everyone! Just wish one of the cool ones was mine... LOL!
I have a few like this and the edges of the other dollar can be seen sunken in on each side of the letter. this probably happened while in the big huge coin bins at the mint from extreme pressure from the coins weight .
I unlike this happening to you, but the site doesn't let me. There is a weather thread that says the polar vortex is coming to get you again. Keep the water flowing!!!!
I strongly suspect that the D on the 1964 cent is a contact mark from another cent. It's very rare for a dropped letter to appear on the face opposite the one it's derived from. The D happens to be on the highest point of the design; it's not likely that a dropped letter will find itself in this area but it is consistent with a contact mark. Finally the D fades out; incomplete dropped letters tend to terminate abruptly.
Mike you may be right but I kinda doubt that the D fades out, it looks like part of it is filled in level with the debris from many years of use. the D also looks like it is too crisp and smooth for it to be from a letter on another coin pushing this deep into this one. I also don't see any displaced metal at the edges of the D . The problem I see with it is this may not be easy to authenticate because of the many years of use.
I have my doubts on this one. Although it does fit the shape and size of the D from the reverse, my opinion is that it is PMD and not a dropped letter. You may want to send this one into an expert for the final say, Tommy.
You have doubts on any coin I post... The D on the reverse is the same exact size as the D from united on the obverse.. Im not gonna even bother to debate with You on this one. thanks anyway
Mike theres is no way thats a contact mark The D is too deep and to sharp. look athe positioning of the D on the obverse side is in the same position of the D in United. We can clear this up easy You want me to send it over?
