Hey Gang, really excited here. Just received a few coins back from James Wiles and I have been credited with finding a new variety! It is a 1936D Arkansas Half dollar listed as DDR-001, & RPM-001 D/D east. I need some help from all of you. While I am taking some photos so I can post for everyone to see, I need all those members who have a 1936D Arkansas Half to look on the reverse of their coin to see if it exhibits the same doubling and RPM. Obviously, the mint mark is re-punched and directly to the east. The doubling on the reverse can be seen with a 10x or 16x loupe on the right hand rays and very prominently in ERICA of America. Now that this coin has been identified we need to verify if this is a working hub/die doubling or a master hub/die doubling. This makes all the difference. Any die hard Ike collectors will understand. When I found my 1934D Oregon Trail Tripled die half dollar, I sent it off to James Wiles as well. Here is what he explained to me....basically this coin is common, but it is rare. Huh? you are probably asking yourself. Well, more clearly stated, the coin had only 7,000 minted which makes this coin, for a lack of a better word "rare", but a good number of these coins exhibited this tripling which makes it common. Remember, for these early commemoratives with these low mintages, only one or two dies may have been used. The 1936D Arkansas is no different with a mintage of just over 9k. So I am asking all of you to help out. Thanks in advance. Joe
You seem to know your stuff about these Commem Halves Joe, I need to dig one of mine out that exhibits some machine doubling and possibly get in contact with Mr. Wiles to see if it is a known variation. Ill do some digging here in a little bit and post back which coin exactly and what im seeing
No prob! Would love to see what you have. MD was/is quite common on these. Unfortunately, the early commemoratives aren't as well studied like some of the other series so there may be more varieties out there for the picking. This is one of my areas of interest so I am always on the look out for varieties.
Well I think its machine doubling, but I could be wrong. At any rate it's the 1920-P Pilgrim half dollar. I would be interested to know what type of variations are listed, if any for this particular coin. Mine has something cool going on with a lot of the letters but I don't have a camera with the capability of capturing worth while photographs.
A little late, but as promised, here are the pics from the 1936D Arkansas Commemorative Half that most strongly detail the DDR and RPM.
Like I related to you earlier Joe, mine doesn't seem to exhibit any doubling at all. Thanks for the pics.......I'll have another look tomorrow. And so sorry I missed your call. Give ya a buzz back tomorrow dear friend......
