Hi, I have a 20 Dollar liberty 1878-s gold coin in excellent condition. Anyone has an idea of it's worth? Thanks
No one will have any idea what it's worth without any pictures of the coin that you want a value placed on.
The coin is clear and undamaged. Some lines look no so sharp because of the photo taking, not on the coin.
Is it an 87s or a 78s? The Greysheet gives around $1350 in both cases for MS60 coins. To me it looks AU55-58, unlikely it would grade MS.
It looks like the coin could benefit from a numerical grade but that would run you $$. In MS62, if you were so lucky, the coin triples in value.
Thanks for the replies. I am very new to this world therefore, Owle, to simplify it, you mean to say that if I send it to grading it might triple it's value due to it's condition?
Depending on the grade it comes back, if high enough of a grade it could command a higher resale value once bearing a certified grade. Can you get a shot of the obverse (face) without so much reflection and a straight on shot of the reverse. One pic is easy to blow up but hard to see fine details while the other can't be enlarged and is hard to read tilted on an angle. I think there are a number of hits on the face of Liberty that may hold the coin in AU grades, no MS, just going by these pics.
Cost depends on the company you go with and whether you are a member of that grading service or submitting the coin through a local coin dealer or doing so at a coin show where the grading companies accept submissions. So cost of membership or not, plus grading fees and services you select. Check the submission forms they have online, NGC, PCGS, or ANACS.
NGC would run an early bird fee which for me a dealer is $25 plus and $8 invoice fee plus shipping to and from. You could easily spend $50 on one coin, that's why you look for a dealer who could combine it with other orders, maybe even a gold rush order which runs $20 a coin. If HA put the coin in their "B" category of AU58 coins they would offer a little over $1300. My guess is it is worth a little more than that, but you won't get it except on a buy sell trade forum. I would put it on that list asking $1600 and see if you get any bites, and settle for a reasonable figure.
It is a nice, presentable double eagle. I think you have a small shot at MS-60, but AU-58 is probably the most realistic expectation.
Considering the images presented, and the perceived manner handled, if established genuine, I would estimate that a private sale might garner a price of 105-110% melt value, ~$1300 - $1350. JMHO
