I would like see some civil war coinage not the regular issued coins but the tokens or whatever they are called. If you don't mind please post some. Thanks
Here are 3 more.... These 3 are also considered a Lincoln campaign tokens for the 1864 presidential election:
For those interested in CWT's I can recommend the Civil War Token Society. http://www.cwtsociety.com/ The club publication is full of well researched and written articles by members and worth the dues alone. Members also have access to nice discounts on reference materials.
John I purchased that book, and enjoyed the introductory sections very much. The plate photos are excellent. Not all varieties are noted in the book however, and in many places in the text there are strange five digit reverse die numbers. The problem is that there are no five digit die numbers. On balance I like the book. And look forward to an updated edition.
It is a great reference like PG pointed out. Like him, I have a couple pieces that are not referenced in there as well. All of the more seen patriotics and store cards are represented in that book. Definitely worth the money.
I haven't looked at the Bowers' Redbook Guide for CWT's, but IMHO the best resources for identification of the CWT dies are the books on 1) Patriotic CWT's and 2) Civil War Storecard CWT's by George & Melvin Fuld.
Very nice Knickerbocker mackwork I don't have very many Patriotic token, focus on store cards mainly, but here are a couple I've picked up over the years.
d.t. Nice Army & Navy It's a Fuld 221/324 Your two storecards are: P.G. Albright OH 535A-8a Rev 1084, Rarity 2 H.K. Nobloch OH 535D-4a, Rev 1224, Rarity 4
Those are impressive pieces everyone. I am going to make it a point to find one when I get to a show. The ones I've seen mostly are in the ends of wheat rolls on Ebay LOL. Are store cards actual coins from a store or business?
The Patriotic and Store Card tokens are privately manufactured tokens that were used as substitute coins during the US Civil War. With all coinage being hoarded local merchants took a cue from the Hard Tmes tokens an utilized these pieces to be able to make change for customers.
All nice CWT's! Keep them coming! I've always found them more interesting than coins - lots of designs and die combinations.
