Getting back into collecting after a very long lay off. I've always been a fan of Type sets and I am putting another one together......at a break neck pace at first but starting to slow $$.

When I first collected there was no TPG or slabs like you see everywhere today. I'm about 50/50 on raws vs slabbed at this point and I'd like to enter them into a database like PCGS and NGC have. I have no interest in being competitive but I would like to "fill in the holes" per se but I can't seem to get it done based upon 1/2 my coins being raw.

Maybe I'm just naïve but the way PCGS doesn't let you include other slabs, and NGC lets you use PCGS slabs but for no points and no raws allowed at all seem so proprietary to just their system and not in the spirit of collecting for the growth of the hobby.

Is there a section I am missing where I can just plug all my coins in without creating a very time consuming custom set or something? And if I create a custom set, how do I leave the holes for spots to fill still? Any help appreciated. Again, I don't want to compete in collecting, I just want to enjoy it. Thanks.

If say your best option would be a spread sheet. Unfortunate the tpg is set up for their slabs. And really it'd be hard to track/be honest with what's in ones set if they allowed raw coins. Slabs help track the coins via barcodes. I'd see what your saying but maybe your own excel spread sheet would work best. As someone who loves registry sets, and since your getting back into it...maybe really start fresh, try a NGC/PCGS set.

Registry sets are there for those wanting to compete. That's just the way it is.

I have my coins registered at NGC. I get points for the PCGS coins I register. It may take a few days for them to confirm the coin, but I always end up getting points.

So it seems. I just like the format how they have the sets created and I can add my coins. They already let you add them to inventory but not a set. Seems like a simple add to me in a "non-competitive" category. It's a great reference for on the road if I come across something and don't have my spreadsheet on my iPhone current. Let's face it, when it comes to seated liberty variety I don't know off the top of my head which ones I have in which denomination. Or if my flying eagle is XF45 or AU50 when I come across something I might want to upgrade to.

And not to sound like an entitled crybaby, but I don't understand the competition with the sets. Some guy could spend his whole life collecting a great set of coins while scraping away saving up for the next one and then some guy can win the lottery and in a year put together a set to rival a lifetime accomplishment. I really respect the guys that put the time and effort into great sets and actually had to make sacrifices to accomplish that goal. That's why I love golf. I don't care how much money you throw at it, most will never be legit single digit handicaps. It takes work and ability. But that's also why I only compete with myself.

Just ignore everyone else. Use the registries for your own satisfaction and ignore the others.

I concur completely, and it is also a useful way of inventorying slabbed coins.

I don't really agree with this, but I understand why you say it. Let me explain: I have several registry sets and one custom set. I use the NGC coin manager to organize my coins; records purchases, sales, inventory reports, pictures database, etc. It is very easy to select certain coins from this collection manager to add to a custom set, including raw coins. It is also very easy to add to registry sets, including both PCGS and NGC coins. For some people who don't have the $$$ needed to really compete, this can still be a good option. I can use registry set to focus on a certain part of my collection, or to show off and link to a specific part, which makes it easy to see coins still needed "holes", AKA goals, etc. So in my mind, registry is an easy and free all purpose manager / want list, display case, and kitchen sink. It is also very easy to output from this software as excel spreadsheet, PDF, XML, etc as buy lists, or an offline collection database. In other words, this a great and equal benefits to competitive people AND non-competitive people.

yup, me too. They need to "confirm" the PCGS coins, but usually within 1 business day. I've never had an issue. But I do seem to remember NGC purging PCGS coins from the World Coins registry sets (none of which I use). So if you are into world coins, this may be where the "no-point" idea came from.

Thanks Geek. You're probably right. I don't have any world coins. YET.

It is just my opinion but I feel like modern coins would drop by at least 50% if they closed down registry sets. I think many people can't compete with the type or historical sets but still want to be on the website so they do moderns.

I think from a marketing point of view it is awesome. Look at all the modern coins graded. Genius marketing has to be given credit even if you don't believe in stabbing moderns.

Just what I think that's all

That sounds really cool. I had made an excel that did all that for my coins then my computer died and I lost it.

I agree. That's why I'd like to see the exact same sets that competitive has in a non comp section that allows raws. I'd like it for organizing my type set but I can really see younger people like to enter their roll searched moderns. It will give them exposure to TPG even when they can't afford it. Lets face it, kids are different today and they like technology. Let them collect and use the computer. Once they get the bug they may blossom into full fledged collectors that pay for TPG services.
