Top of my wish list is any Hammered Gold, been digging almost 4 years and have recovered 18th and 20th C gold coins and several 17th C silvers, so my finding one is not outside the realm of possibility. My recovered items items have so much more personal value to me than those purchased, (although condition is oft wanting). Imo research into old sites and then searching thru the trash with a metal detector is among my most satisfying endeavors. Enjoyed seeing everyones contributions! HH, Herbie.
Just noticed that the pix I posted were ones I edited to hide the ding I gave it during recovery. I was actually digging another nearby target when this Ducat came to light on top of the saltmud pile,(in my first month of detecting) it was as bright and shiny as in the pix, I first thought plastic token/play money until I picked it up. It was recovered within 5 feet of a currently used boat dock and I'm sure dozens if not hundreds of people have walked over it during its internment. Site was used as a boatyard and anchorage for larger ships who chose not to attempt the treacherous currents between here and the larger port a bit upstream. I dubbed the small inlet 'Cob Cove' and it has given me hundreds of coins and artifacts 1600-present. I am always very grateful to have been the first to discover this historic site, I've been active with the local historic society and they display some of my finds. HH All! Herbie.
One of my dream coins is an 1822 $5 I'd love an 1815 too always hoped to find one working on an old house a brasher eould be nice too the 1881 $5 was found in a locked box in a friends attic she couldn't open it so she brought it to me was full of jewelry papers the $5 and a gold pocket watch even her husbands great great grandmothers gold wedding ring I bought the $5 from her she also a couple years before found a 1851 $1 gold there too which I also have house been in her husbands family since new is ca 1860
Not very old, they still strike these with a 1915 date, this one is likely pre 1925. Large diameter and thin, same as my older Netherlands Ducat
I'm just curious, anyone know the condition of this coin? I know it has deep scratch on it. I'm thinking XF
