I know almost nothing about gold coins but i saw my local coin shop has $10 gold pieces (i think they are mostly indian heads) for $745 I've always wanted one but i'm not sure if that is a good price. I saw some with some good luster but didn't get a real close look at them. I have a rough idea of what low mid and high grade coins look like, and i can spot cleaning. So if I go back and see an uncleaned gold piece that is AU+ then would that be a good deal? also would there be anything I should be careful of?
That would be a good deal . As long as the shop guarantees their coins as there are a lot of counterfeit gold out there .
That's a good price. But I've found it can be really hard to tell if gold has been cleaned unless you are practiced which i am not. I've seen some really nice gold sent off for grading that came back details. Even so, if you want it then buy it as long as you trust it's real. At that price you're not paying a huge premium over spot so even if cleaned it has value.
thanks for the help, I didn't see any graded ones, but i will ask next time if they are guaranteed genuine, don't they counterfeit $10 pieces in gold? what would be a good indicator of a counterfeit?
just took my friend who was interested in coins to a local shop today and he got a ten dollar classic head for 650. so 745 seems a bit steep at the moment.
Depends on a lot. Indian heads have always sold for a premium over liberty heads. Then there are grade, cleaning, etc concerns. No easy way to know. For a nice au uncleaned indian I would not think $745 is very far out of line.
Most gold counterfeits are very good . The things to look for are tooling marks that shouldn't be there . Best to buy some books on recognizing counterfeits .
I didn't say it was sir, but we do not know either its grade nor your friend's. These indians typically sold for $50-100 more than the liberty heads historically, if both the same grade.
You need to get the book "United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide" by Bill Fivaz ISB# 079482007-7. It will give you insight into what to look for in gold coins. Get a guide on how to grade them too. With this knowledge you can feel better when looking and buying gold coins. Good luck. Go to shows, and club meeting and see what they have and get to know some of the dealers. Join a club, you then, will find out more, and see more about all coins, and currency, foreign and domestic.
