What do you guys think about this 1853 French 5 Centimes? I found it in the junk bins and basically got it for free.

It's "FOREIGN". Mods please fix the spelling. It's gone on long enough. Please at least lock this thread and start a new one with the correct spelling.

Nice 5 centimes, I know the 10 cents of the same type are always found worn completely flat. This type was one of my 1st foreign coins ever.

Got these two recently from Heritage NYICS auction. Both of these I've bid on before at various auctions and lost them. The 1819 appeared in the NY Stack's sale, 2011 where I lost it to a split bid. The 1832 is from the Eliasberg auction (2005) which I attended in person. Same coins appeared for sale in January, 2014 & I was sucessful. [IMG]

Well I attended the Eliasberg auction in NY Spring, 2005. A famous Latin American dealer told me not to bid much for the coins as everything would be over priced and he could find stuff for me after market more cheaply.

Well that was 2005 and over the past 8 years, he didn't find me a single piece. As mentioned I didn't get the 1832 then. I saw 2 unc Dos Bandaras types in the Millenium auction (2008: which I also attended in person) Both were slabbed 62's with light hairlines (an 1820 and an 1826 I believe). I lost both of them to a coin dealer. I then haggled with that dealer for almost 2 years, trying to buy them but he wanted too much of a markup and eventually sold them to somebody else.

Then I saw the 1819 in Stack's 2011 auction (lot 1512) but lost it to a split bid. I wasn't too upset as I got the really rare Rosas Portrait 8 reales (1836) out of that sale for less than half my maximum.

Hence when I saw these 2 up for sale I made a somewhat concerted, but not crazy, effort and I got them. I believe (???) I know the market for these coins having tried unsucessfully to buy unc ones for almost a decade. I do have a really rare date Dos Bandaras dated 1841 (ef-40) which is unlisted in SCWC. Of course once I pay for & get these they'll be seen only at "informational coin shows", BSA merit badge classes, and the like but will not appear for sale.

The colour on the 1832 is absolutely fantastic. Congrats on the purchase.
