    1845-D Quarter Eagle, MS63
    Ex: Bass, Duke's Creek, Second Finest Known1845-D $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Variety 6-J.
Although the mintages are similar, the 1845-D quarter eagle in higher grades is significantly rarer than the 1844-D. NGC has certified two submissions in MS60, five in MS61, and one each in MS62 and MS63 (this piece). PCGS has seen five grading events in MS61, two MS62, and one each in MS63 and MS64 (12/13). Even though duplications are all but certain, these grades place this coin in a second place within the Condition Census, a position confirmed by our Permanent Auction Archives which show that the Duke's Creek coin and this piece are, in fact, the same, despite Winter's Condition Census listing them separately in the third edition of his D-mint reference.

This piece is far finer than the typical 1845-D, coins that Winter describes as showing subdued, grainy luster and poor eye appeal. Bright luster radiates from the greenish-gold surfaces of this Select Mint State coin. The strike is sharp overall, particularly on the obverse peripheral stars and throughout the reverse. Typical softness appears on the central hair curls. Bold die clashing appears on the reverse, along with an interesting, raised die lump just below the first S of STATES. A few small marks determine the grade, yet this coin offers exceptional eye appeal.
Ex: Harry Bass Collection (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 376; Hancock and Harwell; Duke's Creek Collection (Heritage, 4/2006), lot 1501, brought $34,500; Grand Lake Collection / Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2009), lot 2465, realized $23,000.(25GX, PCGS# 7738)

Thanks for the complements. I really am not traditional, by that I mean I don't always get to hold the coins or even look at them. I make a list like I did for Fun and because

Ive got a great set now complete with two purchase yesterday... 1845d 2.50 63 and 1853 d 2.50 62. I love to finish asset... and i doubt expect to work on to many more
leaning toward type sets... Ive really learned a lot here reading and studing what is said.. Ill be back later and comment on coins from the others... Im sure theres some good ones....

Also picked up an Indian Dansco, Barber Dime Dansco, and Kennedy Dansco.

Only took 4 different coin shops!

Very happy camper. The 1881 has to be my favorite out of the bunch. Color is amazing!

This is my newest addition. I was working last week and one of my fellow co-workers who works in the cage ( Casino ) said to me, "Hey, I got this weird coin, it's big and it's heavy." I took a look at it and instantly pulled out a dollar and gave it to her. As she handed me the ASE, I told her it was a dollar coin and turned it over and showed her the face value was a dollar but it was a 1 oz silver coin. Best dollar I ever spent! AN ASE for face. This is the first ASE to come into the casino. It still has great detail. IMG_6284.JPG IMG_6284.JPG IMG_6285.JPG IMG_6286.JPG IMG_6289.JPG IMG_6291.JPG

I just placed my order for the 1923 Standing Liberty quarter NGC mS-63. It was the last type I needed it to complete my second Capital Plastics 20th century type set holder, BVD-60. Only 7 more holders to go, the #460 (30 coins), Bowers & Ruddy Galleries holder (29 coins), #460 (24 coins), 460-B (23 coins), #451-N (18 coins), Bowers & Merena holder (16 coins, 20th century new designs 1901-1950) and one that is basically on hold until all of the previous six are completed a #490 (38 coins including 8 gold pieces). The picture of this holder is only lacking this quarter.

Ed, nice accomplishment. I really like the look of that 20th Century holder, but i would hate to ADD a coin to it!
