How does a partial refund scam work, the mechanics of it?

Unfortunately thats one of the bad things about Ebay listings....most people (including myself sometimes) never read the entire listing. It's weird though he wanted to return everything just because of one coin. I think he got a great deal on what he got. Maybe post it for sell here when you get it back.

i am going to summarize my particular case. i had a nugget of melted gold that tested higher than 14k but not 18k with a simple acid test. it was listed as such. it was listed as none returnable as once it has left my possession, i have no way of verifying if it was the same one coming back to me, altered, same metal content, etc. this scumbag bought it, and then sends me a message saying it isn't gold. that it is only a certain percentage gold. i explain that is exactly what he bought, and that i do not understand the problem. he then tells me if i do not refund him half of his money, he is going to file a negative, and reverse the payment through paypal. at this point, i said to just return the item and i will refund him. he then tells me he cannot as he has already melted it down. so, in wanting to keep a perfect rating, i refund him half. he still gives me the negative.

the next time i am in NY i am going to knock on his door.

Come to the realization that no matter how many times you state in your eBay listing NO RETURNS, you have no choice because the buyer protection supersedes your NO RETURN policy.

Issue a refund upon return. The buyer may or may not have noticed the coin was a duplicate, but you made the error of intentionally, though apparently not deceptively, putting a coin in the 1912-S slot.

I think this was his point as you had to do just that in an unfortunate attempt to protect your name. While such things do come with the territory, this does not make them okay and it's usually the decent ones who end up having to take it.

Excuse the chatter, but how does one protect from the partial refund scam? I suppose you could suggest that his request is unusual but you would be willing to do it if he first left positive feedback. Or what?

Except you can't hold any refund hostage for a pos feedback from the other party. That could jeopardize your eBay account being closed.

    Who suggested that?

That's basically what you're suggesting the OP do.

I saw a guy selling silver by the pound (from 10 lb lots, to fractions of a lb) and in the shipping details flat out says that he won't leave positive feedback until the buyer does. Turned me away faster than anything.

Please correct me if wrong, but didn't ebay institute a policy supposedly allowing them to issue partials, from a seller's account and without their consent, when and if they see fit? Regardless... there should be no partials allowed unless offered by the seller. Allowing buyers to request them, especially with ebay's ridiculous coddling of buyers, only invites abuse. If it was an all or nothing type situation, perhaps certain buyers would look before jumping.

Perhaps I am reading this wrong, but.... it seems as if you did:

When you learn how to read AND comprehend, perhaps this sort of diversion will cease, that is up to you and you alone.

The scenario at hand (from previous posts -ASSUMING YOU FOLLOW ALONG THE THREAD RATHER THAN JUST JUMP A POST) was that the buyer suggested/requested a partial refund. It is in no way extortion to state the terms required for you to accept THEIR suggestion.

Do you serve any purpose here other than to bait people and/or pick apart well meaning posts? Seriously, you asked and the man answered, but instead of taking the response as clearly intended, you use it as an opportunity to hurl insults? Let's go over this again...

Even though the buyer may have suggested the partial, if the seller were to state that he would do so only if positive feedback were left before the refund was issued, this could be considered the extortion mentioned by BU.

Perhaps this tidbit of advice is better aimed at you:

How sad it must be to feel the need resort to desperate and unnecessary condescension instead of participating in a gentlemanly manner. Momma must be proud.

Buyer should read the description, however, putting a 1911 coin in 1912 slot is not very smart.
