Hi, I've bought recently a Roman Coin that was produced during Constantius II period, 348AD (or so I guess). At the back side there is a radiate Phoenix figure....but very different from all the other Phoenix inscriptions I've seen in Roman coins....less elegant (looks instead like a chicken!!!)....Do you could help me to know more about the exact production place of this coin? Any tip/information/idea? Many thanks to all of you!!!!!
These were made at several mints so there is a lot of variation on them. Your coin is Constans not Constantius. Just looking at the style and what remains of the mintmark, yours seems to be Trier TRP. I don't have one to compare but will show an Arles example.
great!!! thanks! I was then confused about the right emperor.... I am new in these area...a lot to learn!!! I appreciate your feedback. Any tip to learn about roman coins is welcomed. Best
Actually, they're not. They're just less desirable among collectors for some reason, so you can get them at reasonable prices. Look at all the LRB types out there, and you'll only find a handful of phoenix reverses. They aren't scarce per se, but calling them common isn't accurate either.
