I'm thinking that its time for me to put together the short set of walkers. I want them all in 63-65 range, I'm still doing my research. The only question and I know that it comes down to preference, but should I do them slabbed or in a Dansco. What's everyone's thoughts on the series. I don;t have anything other than opinion but I think this set could move up in cost. I just think the coins are beautiful and am ready to collect them.
Personally I would go with AU58's, it'll save you a ton of money and the 58's still look really good. Every now and then I see collectors selling them at my coin club, but usually not slabbed. The early years are gonna cost quite a sum. Can you imagine buying a 1921 in the 63-65 range? Big dollars!! Great series to collect for certain.
If I recall correctly a short set of WL's is considered 1941-1947. I personally prefer a matched set (all slabbed at the same grade). But I don't mind mixing NGC and PCGS slabs. The key would be finding well struck coins. Lots out there with little or no left hand. The most difficult (and hence the most expensive) would be the 1941-S. Learn what a well struck WL looks like and go for them. I think you have targeted a good set. Make sure you get good coins.
That's the one. I have the Dansco, filled with mostly low grade "junk" walkers with a few AU's mixed in. This would be a good looking set with all AU's or higher, but the preference for slab/Dansco is yours alone. Here's some crappy photos I just took of mine:
I would get coins that really look special (e.g. for the toning) and wouldn't care too much about the grade. Why defining a range from MS63 to 65 if you can find an AU58 that looks great and may be more affordable?
PS: I buy slabbed coins and store them in black wooden presentation cases. I can post a pic tomorrow if you're interested...
More I think about it I'm thinking a straight 64 short set. It would be cool if they were all PCGS OGH's or old Fatty NGC ones, it might make the set more of a challange to get them in the same slab type. I might want to do a second set of circulated ones and have them in a dansco. I want the MS set first and feel that most will be bought on line so raw coins are risky via the online markets IMO so I'm leaning for the MS to be slabbed even though they would look awesome in that brown dansco.
If I were doing 65s I'd probably want them stabbed. 63s I would do the dansco set. I am looking to do this set I am thinking 58-63 for me in a dansco. I love this set affordable and a gorgeous coin. I want to finish my franklin set first before diving into another set (I'm doing it in a dansco and 63-64s for the franklins). This will likely be my next set though.
Unless you are extremely adept at grading raw WHLs, I would advise you to build a certified set. The reason for this is because many of these issues, especially the more expensive S-mint coins, have weak central portions on the obverse while other issues are simply better struck AU coins masquerading as MS pieces. The WLH set is tricky with respect to central detail on both sides of the coin.
Interesting I have noticed this about them, that front thigh or dress area can be struck very flat. I have also noticed that the feathers on the eagles leg can be poorly struck. You bring up a good point.
that's how I went at it. I assembled a short set in MS64 slabs a few years ago. you get great looking coins at a reasonable price. I keep then in a nice wood case I built. not my highest $$ group of coins but about my favorite set.
OK here are some pics... as it's after midnight I had to use the photo flash. I have all my ANACS slabs in this presentation case, including the older ones which are smaller. Now imagine this case with nicely toned MS Walkers in it I do not want to advertise it, but if you like the case it's available here: http://www.lighthouse.us/epages/lig...ath=/Shops/leuchtturm_us/Products/HMK3TQSLABS#
I've spent some time looking at coins and am starting to settle in at building a set in 64 and maybe some of the high mintage ones in 65. I'm just trying to decide if it will be pcgs or ngc. Who grades this series better and is more consistant? From what I have seen I'll have a lot more coins to look at in pcgs plastic but the nicer coins that have had eye appeal and have been ones that I would have bought have been in ngc slabs.
I would buy the nicest coin if the price is right. Don't care about the holder... and if that's so important to you, you've always the option to crossover or to submit an already slabbed coin to your preferred TPG.
just a personal bias, but I'd never put an MS-65 coin in a Dansco that would tone it an unattractive brown color. You spend all of that time finding a beautiful coin, only to place it in an album that will destroy its value
