1928 peace dollar ?s

Hello everyone , I am new to coins and new to the forum . I recently was given the task of going trough my fathers collection of coins he has been passed down to him by relatives that have passed away. I do not know the true worth of most of these coins and thus is why I come to you for advice .

The family members I do not believe were big time collectors but non the less they did keep a lot of coins , they were all of older age so there is some old coins , and the task is almost overwhelming for someone new like me , but here I go . I would like to start with this one first and will post many many more as we go the next weeks or months . If my photos are of poor quality please forgive as I am also trying to figure out how to capture these coins the best way .

I would think yours falls into the F-VF range. I recommend getting it graded as a way to both preserve its current condition as well as realize a price closer to those presented in the link, if you ever decide to sell. if its real and I highly doubt it... but im a skeptic when it comes to hvc... get it checked

What gives you doubt of authenticity?

 

You probably know this but don't try to clean any of the coins.
It will kill the value.

 

I think it's real but I would weigh it. Images don't tell you everything.

 

It looks real to me but definately weigh it. I have one of a similar quality that I personally graded as F-12. I would estimate the value at about $260 based on ebay sold listings.

 

I would paint it pink And make it into a pendant

 

Thank you for the info , I would assume it is real hehehe I will weight it though as suggested . I will have more to post as I have 8 peace dollars and 11 morgans ...but the pennies ,dimes, nickels, quarters , half dollars range in the 100s

 

It looks harshly cleaned to me from these photos, but that date still carries significant value even when damaged -- assuming, again, that it's genuine. I don't see any obvious sign of tampering around the mint-mark location, but I'm far from an expert.

 

Welcome Ktoole, Starting off with such a high value coin is interesting. It indicates that the previous collectors knew what to save. It is my fondess wish that most of the other coins you inheirited are of equal value. Looking forward to your new postings.
In case you don't know, that comment by Buckrodgers is not to be taken seriously. Any post damages to a valued coin will reduce the coin value by half or more depending on the extent.

Actually I know Buck in real life we live about 15 minutes from each other and are good fishing buddies , he is the one that suggested I come here to more knowledgeable folks like your selves ..as I have A LOT of coins to go through ...I do not believe any of these to have been cleaned and most were picked up by the people at the time they would have been in circulation my father is 87 years old and the people these came from were older than him . Here is a list I compiled of the Morgans and Peace dollars the prices I have taken from cointracker.com just as a idea but will be posting photos for you guys to give me a realistic idea of value . Were you see 4.4.4.4. that just means I have 4 of these I did not list the mint mark for them in the list most are either philly or Orleans marks but one I believe is a San mark as it is a S mark ....

Very nice, Ktoole. My only suggestion would be to take a close look for or at the MM's, they will make a great determination on the value of these fine coins. Any coins value at $ 500.00 or more I would seriously think about getting certified.

I respectfully suggest that you ignore values quoted by that website and instead focus on learning the true conditions of your coins as this is what will dictate their value. Also, and going only on the examples shown in a few of your threads, it appears as if at least some of the coins have been harshly cleaned and/or have other problems that will effect value. Keep in mind that just because you believe the coins picked from circulation by your father, this does not mean they are uncleaned or free of problems: the coins themselves are what will tell you if they've been cleaned or not. Placing a value on certain coins can sometimes be difficult as much depends on where, when, and to whom the coin is sold. On ebay it is not uncommon to see coins sell for substantially more than they would if sold at a B&M or small show. Please understand that common date circulated dollars are plentiful and are often bought/sold based on their melt value, so with such coins it may be best to use this as your baseline.

Any suggestions on what to look for on Mercury dimes would be greatly appreciated !

 

look for 1916 and 1942 over 41

 

you may be right books. I can't tell one way or the other from the photo.

 

In Mercury Dimes, the keys to look for are 1916-D, NOT plain, NOT San Francisco, just the 1916 Denver coin and the 1942/41 overdates from both Philadelphia and Denver.

Pictures of the overdates are readily available if you do a google image search.

The thing to know about the 16-D is that there are more fakes ones than real ones. If you find one in this collection, have it certified before you attempt to sell it. It will sell for big $$$ but only if authenticated and certified.

 

1921 & 1921d are also better dates for mercury dimes.
