This is my one good graded Trade Dollar. I love TDs but alas, most that I find at local estate auctions come back from NGC as cleaned. But this one, that I got fairly cheap, came back with a nice grade. I love the colors on it.
Nice one, I have never had a coin professionally graded but have been thinking about it recently. Can you give me some advice, what does it cost? I have decided to sell off some of my collectibles i.e. Coins and Stamps. Went to an auction house and was shocked to say the least so I have found someone I'm sending stamps to at a reasonable price and now thinking to get the best price for the coins I want to sell maybe I should get them graded or just ask the price I think they grade at and see what happens.
I paid $200 for it at an auction. I sure felt like I got a steal on that one. I also got an 1877-S for the same price, beautifully toned, and it came back cleaned...but it looks like my 1878. I don't know what they saw but I am thinking about cracking it and sending it to PCGS and see what they come back with.
Hunter, as many in here will tell you, not all coins are worth sending in for grading. Your best bet I think would be to go to a local coin show or local coin club and have someone look at them and see which ones would be worth sending in for grading. I still have a hard time sometimes telling if a coin has been cleaned so I get some back with that designation. As far as cost, go to the NGC and PCGS websites and see what it costs to join and you can see there what it costs to get the coins graded. Bear in mind that the top grading companies are not fast when it comes to grading, almost always taking 5-6 weeks to get your coins back to you. Then there is the cost of shipping and insurance to and from the grading company. So it adds up quickly and depending on the overall condition of your coins it may not be worth the cost of grading.
Thanks so much for the info, I will check out the websites again, I did once before and remember thinking that if it's a real valuable coin it is not worth it as they all seemed to want a flat fee and a percentage of the value.
If I could buy MS-62 Trade dollars for $200 , I'd go back to collecting them actively , great pick up .
Trust me, that is an exception to the rule--same goes for my latest pick up. Fgure over $700 for each nice one.
Paid 650+ for all my unc ones like au trades for the value can often be bought 3-400 for some beautiful coins with great eye appeal my favorite is my 1882 trade I'd buy this coin all day for $200 even for double was a great pickup for the money but if your going to buy raw trades you better know what your doing not a series for beginners buy slabbed if you have the slightest doubts
