Hi there everyone, I just wanted to post a few photos of my first Carson City Morgan! As I said it is a 1883 Carson City. The condition seems pretty nice, a couple light surface abrasions but very clean over all. I got it in trade and feel I got a pretty good deal. I was just wondering what you would all grade it at judging by the photos and maybe give a rough idea as of the value. Thanks all, and Happy Holidays!!
sorry, had some some problems with the pictures for a second, got it all sorted out now though. Thanks!
It looks like a solid 63 with an outside chance at 64. The weakness in the hair above the ear might hold it back. It looks like it may have been struck slightly off-center. Chris
1883 CC was my first ever Morgan back in 1977. Not nearly that nice of condition being a 12yr old. Nice find.
Does anyone think this coin would be a good candidate for a dipping? The mottled toning is not particuly attractive. The coin also has no bag marks. It seems to me a quick dip would leave a nice white coin with no major hits and beautiful clean fieds. It may grade 65. Anyone agree?
I was thinking about mentioning a quick dip, myself, but didn't know if the discoloration (I don't consider that toning) would bother you. Like I said, I think it has a chance at 64, but I think a 65 would be asking too much. Chris
If say 63+ could easily go 64 as liberal as the tpg are with Morgan's and I don't see any significant marks just a slightly weak strike as to dipping it my vote is no!! I like coins with color and don't find the toning the least bit offensive
Beautiful example of the CC mint. I agree with 63. No more, no less. Solid coin. ^.- I wouldn't dip her. She is beautiful as she is.
here's the thing about it, Mike and Chris. The coin shows nice mottled toning that is completely market acceptable and won't affect the grade. In fact, it might make the coin MORE desirable as it is proof positive that the coin hasn't been cleaned. A dip may make the coin more bright and even a touch more attractive, but IMHO will let a doubt creep in as to the coin's original luster which can severely affect it's value in a negative way.
Put me in at 63 , and as a person who has dipped a couple coins I say no , it's fine the way it is . Nice '83-CC coin .
I agree , it might have been dipped before , even a 3 second dip could impair the luster cutting it's value and leaving a Detailed coin . I wouldn't chance it . I would put it into a better holder though .
Hey everyone just wanted to say thanks for all of your input. Really nice to hear a good discussion arise about my new coin , Also happy to hear some of you say ms 63/64!
