I have noticed a seller auctioning three different 1998 Zambia proof elephants on ebay. Each has a different elephant on front and a different coin back that is dated 1998. As you look further into the listing it states "silver plated". Take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks
Well, this particular seller makes sure you know they're fake, lol: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BEWARE-F-A-...7341837?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item2c7985538d
What really makes this a fake for me is that the coin that is shown states .999 Ag and yet in the listing later on it states it is silver plated. How is this possible?
This listing shows that eBay bidders just don't read the description. Yes, the coin is a silver plated replica, but the buyer doesn't state this in his title, and the coin shows .999; so the auction is "iffy" at best, and the seller should be ashamed of himself for listing it like this. $50 plus for a plated replica is about $49 too much. Here's one of his three listings: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ZAMBIA-1998...8460602?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item485ed1ea3a You can always hit the "report item" button, but eBay probably won't pull the listing.
The genuine coins don't show a decimal either. Many silver rounds drop the decimal... I guess it's supposed to be "understood".
Also, all the 99-03 Zambia's are 5000 kwacha. This 98 shows that it is 4000 and is mirror proof on it yet the elephant side is matte finish.
Well I got bit by a bad bid. Hopeful to be able to return it. I will wait until I receive it before I see. 1998 Zambia elephant that I made a rash bid on and am going to eat it. Well, yes you should say. That coin looks the same on both sides. NOT. This guy is selling three of these, or should I say, two more with the same mirror finish on one side and a different elephant on the other two coins for the same year.
This seller has a 14 day return policy, and as they state, you can return coin for any reason for a full refund. If you have any concerns at all after you receive, email the seller and let him know how you feel. My experience is most sellers (especially major sellers like this one) will pay the return postage.
Nosuch coin in my copy of Standard catalog. The 4000 Kwacha side matches the 1998 coins, but the African Wildlife series is on 5000 Kwacha and none of them have this design. Another interesting bit of info, according to the SCWC the 4000 Kwacha coins may have 999 on them, but according to the book they are coppernickel. I suspect that may be an error in the book though.

Thanks. I found it also. I also found a site that shows the coin listed. I believe it was posted as a way to make it look real. The seller contacted me and asked if I still wanted it and I said no. We will see.
