Hello new here im only 17 and from Ireland and big into us coin collecting and have a near complete lincoln cent collection,Have this beauty on hold for me for 200 euros,I just want to know if the coin is okay not been cleaned etc, looking for an expert opinion on the authenticity and value if i decide to sell her,What do ye think good buy?
Hi Irish, welcome aboard. There's something about the coin that looks suspect to me. The mintmark in particular seems off. I'll defer to some of the more seasoned Lincoln collectors to help you out better. Don't pull the trigger and buy it quite yet.
Thanks for the replys, hope its not a fake but if it is will back out of deal! Anymore advice? Fake?Is it the price your put off by?
This penny has a s mint like this one!Bit slanted to the side. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1909-S-VDB-...98?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item485ea4900e
At this point, my opinion on the coin is 51/49. The 51% of me says not to buy it because it has so many red flags. Personally, if I were looking for this particular (and popular) date for my collection, I would buy a certified example. It's just too risky.
I am worried as well. Why are the date and VDB so bright and clear versus the portrait? This coin in particular amongst wheat cents begs being bought slabbed and authenticated. This has been a key basically from the moment it was struck, and as such hundreds and hundreds of thousands of fakes have been made over the last 100 years. I am not a big fan of slabbing, but the authentication aspect of slabbing is invaluable for such a coin like this.
Exactly, VDB would have been obliterated by just the wear alone, the corrosion would hide it much more.
Could any of ye helpful people figure it out from this? http://www.ebay.com/gds/Coin-Fake-Detection-1909-S-VDB-Lincoln-Cent-/10000000015293333/g.html
The mint mark looks as though it's been added post-mint. This date and mint are highly faked for obvious reasons, as the real 1909-S VDB even in lower grades have a substantial premium. You stated the asking price is 200 euros? That's $273.86 USD, and is quite for the condition that coin is in, which looks to be G(though your photos are quite small) and should be upwards of $650-$700. This is one to pass on.
So ye think its a real 1909 v.d.b but the s is added at a later date. The vdb looks correct according to the link i posted,Any help with the mint mark.
I cannot tell from your pics regarding the dot after the D or the wheat stalk. That is the area I would look at if you can see your coin clearer. However, I will reiterate there is a reason why 99.9% of authentic 09s VDB's are not slabbed. Personally, I would not buy one, or a 1916d dime, uncertified.
Asked for better picture will have in the next day or 2 hopefully, Must be a fake unfortunately by all the posters!
Not necessarily sir. Real items are found occasionally, but especially for this coin I am usually higher skeptical of unslabbed pieces. There are simply LOTS of fakes out there. We are simply trying to help you sir, so we are being extra cautious.
Well, Tom B, a well respected numismatic dealer, said here he would not pay 200 Euro for it. Personally, I would follow his advice. 09sVDB's are a weird issue. So many were saved that one in VG or G is actually pretty scarce, much scarcer than one in XF. If I wished to own one of these, I would save up to afford a nice XF or AU example certified by NGC or PCGS, since there is not much of a premium between a VG and XF certified examples. Many times what seems like a deal really isn't. Buy one certified and rest assured you have a authentic, collectible example. Just my personal opinion sir. If not, maybe see if this dealer would send it in to be certified.
it honestly looks like an artificially aged Chinese counterfeit to me. Could just be the pics. I don't like the shape of the mint mark.
