    To open,
    Or not to open?
    That is the question.
    Whether 'tis nobler to leave
    In its OGP from 1960?
Or allow the mind to suffer....

    Opinions?

It was never sealed in the first place......

    exactly. Why not open it?

I'd steam it open so as not to distress the envelope. It's what most guys on eBay do before they re-seal them and sell them as Mint-sealed sets. ;)

it's impossible to tell, but they weren't sealed when they left the Mint. The only question is how long has it been since this one was last opened?

Good question. I hadn't received my secret Santa gift, so I went to my Dad's house to do some auto maintenance in preparation to drive 45 mins each way to Santa myself at a b&m ;) coming back to pick up my girlfriend to go with, my secret Santa gift was in the mailbox. I still went :) this was part of his stock.

The only way it could have been sealed is if it had a canceled stamp on it it. The mint would seal these and send them out as regular mail.........

It's a pretty nice set overall. Trying to get decent photos of individual coins through the cello is a real bugger! image.jpg image.jpg

The thing that blows huge chunks on this, is the envelopes were not sealed prior to shipping from the Mint, but over the last several years or so, people have bought these sets, 1960-1965, and sealed the envelopes, and marketed them as Mint sealed, never opened, which is not true at all.

I recently bought a 1959 proof set, that someone sealed the envelope prior to selling it to the dealer I bought it from, who had to slice the top of the envelope open to inspect the coins and cellowrap inside.

Ah! I never realized that, I have a bunch I've been sitting on for a few years, I open one every now and then, nice coins but never find any rare one's Now I know why, ha! I sold some at a yard sale not too long ago getting $12 bucks each? I still have a pile, guess I will just open them up.

My grandfather, who gave me his coin collection, had lots of mint sets, but a mouse had gotten into the closet and the box he was keeping them in, and chewed up many of the envelopes. All the bags are intact, I'm assuming rats won't do plastic, but it really sucks about the envelopes.

And place a higher price tag on them at your garage sales.

Average price in my area at this time, $35 per set 60-64, and the 65 SMS(the only SMS in an envelope) $10.
