Is this just a case of Bidiots on eBay, or is there something I'm missing???

This is one of the few dates I still need to complete my PF69 Kennedy set. According to Numismedia, this should be going for around $21.25, and NGC's price guide shows it as $21 with a downward trend.

    So what's up???

Here's the link to the eBay auction in question...

I do not see anything a miss however I do see someone getting lucky on their sale. If someone else was also looking for this coin and had been then it's very well they decided to spend as much as needed. It could have very well been a gift to someone else as well. There were only three bidders on this one and it looks like 2 of them were willing to go out of their way on getting what they wanted. Let the bidding wars start. Sometimes money don't mean a thang. It does have nice appeal though.

I have before but it isn't often. When buyers see a market fluctuation then they run for it. One year something else is in and another out. Also even though the price guides are helpful they are still actually from the year before unless they are updated on a regular basis. Let us see what happens in 2015 with this item. I wonder if the Red Book and such will see a small jump in price on this or the Kennedy series? It's hard telling.

I bought my 50C 1973-S PCGS PF 69 ULTRA CAMEO for $7.38 with shipping on 7/11/2011. I show current guide value is $21.25, but in reality it's closer to $15. I have no idea why anyone would pay more than ~$15 for one of these.

Now they may have thought they were buying one year earlier, 50C 1972 S in that grade is a tough coin. That is like a $50-$100 coin depending on where you buy it.

Its just shill bidding, and fishing. He had 3 differnt bidders, and they all had between 60% a 70% activity with seller.

I'd contact you for the couple of holes I have left in my series, but I'm trying to do all NGC certified... The only holes I have left are '73 & '95.... Looking for NGC PF69 UC.

Buy the one green linked to - was only $23, but overpriced at that.

As to what's going with the others - yes Virginia there are that many people out there who have no clue what they are doing !

I spotted that same one when I started searching for PCGS graded versions...

What would it cost to get it reslabbed NGC? If it means anything, I'm a "free" member of ANA....

Let us also acknowledge Ebay sales, like book deals, are a great way of passing money to people you may not wish to publicly acknowledge giving money to. You just have a 3rd party forward the money you provide them.

Almost certainly more than it cost you to buy it. So why waste the money ? If having one in an NGC slab, and only in an NGC slab, means that much to you then just be patient. There are plenty of them out there for the same money or less.

As mentioned above, in reality this is a $15 coin.

Good advice. I've waited this long, I can wait a bit longer.

The rest of my series is in NGC slabs so I would like to get this and my other missing item in NGC slabs if possible.

    Thanks

It's all in the label folks.

I could be wrong, but this is a special label for dealers only over at PCGS which basically means, I cannot get my own graded. I must purchase it from an authorized dealer.

The PCGS label looks like this:

    Kennedy 1973-S Portrait 18101362 PCGS PR69DCAM Slab Obv.jpg Kennedy 1973-S Portrait 18101362 PCGS PR69DCAM Slab Rev.jpg

I did not pay comparable price to the coin in the OP but if someone decided they wanted their proof collection in such a label, it is possible that they would be willing to pay that much if it was one they needed and of it was one which simply did not come up that often.

Some of the Eisenhower 40th Anniversary Labels also get some nice premiums.

Is it right? That's really up to the person that bought it.

Is it STUPID? That's really up to the collector that bought it.
