ok found a clip cent in a large bag of Wheaties , its got gang green all over, I soaked it in olive oil to get the green off and return some life to it.. how long should I do this for??? I was thinking about a week or so then give it a bath to get the oil off
How long? Do it until you get the results you want. I'm aware of situations where a coin was soaked for several months.
Sometimes it can take months for olive oil to do the job you are trying to do. That said, are you sure that the green stuff you are seeing is verdigris ? PVC residue is often green also, and olive oil won't do anything to that. Acetone will remove it though, but acetone won't do anything to verdigris. To be honest, trying anything is not worth the effort. But if you are set on trying then forget olive oil, and try the acetone first. You'll know overnight if it works. If it doesn't, then buy some Verdi-Care and use that.
Buy some Verdi care. Totally worth buying it. Member badthad on here is the inventor of it. Worked great on my Lincoln's.
NEVER use olive oil on coins. The acids will give it odd colors and the end result is undesirable 99% of the time. Acids and coins to not play well.
I don't completely agree with you BUT its use requires constant monitoring. I've never done it but I know someone who has with generally good results.
I had some green coins. I rinsed them in acetone, then xylene. Then soaked them in Verdi-Care for a few hours until the green stuff was able to come off when I poked it with a toothpick. If you use Verdi-Care, follow the directions exactly. I was happy with the results.
