I found this odd 1979-D penny. It has diagonal stripes on each side. Error, coin damage, or something else?
I think this is an issue with the mixing of the metals for the coin. I don't think it's an error and it isn't damage. They are fairly common and don't carry any sort of premiums. Still cool to see, though. Have a look at this thread: http://www.cointalk.com/threads/got-wood.65353/
It is called a woody. I guess of the choices you offer, it would be something else. Earlier ones are cause by improper alloy mixing, but I am not sure that is the case for these later ones. You might enjoy looking at or reading further here; http://www.cointalk.com/threads/got-wood.65353/
yea its a woody, nice one too, read somewhere, maybe this forum, that you wont find them on zincolns, only the copper cents,,
actually while roll hunting cents, i've found a number of them from 60's an 70's, none as good looking as this one tho, but close..
Those are the only ones I save anymore. I've found quite a few with those lines on just one side - but not many with it on both sides.
