Anybody in LA area or know somebody out there reputable that is a collector of US coins-mainly Morgans. I should say he/she would sort of need to be a collector with very 'deep pockets'

Talking like 95o Morgan MS62 level type coins.

There's lot of collectors in California. If you want Morgans just go to one of the Long Beach shows, you'll find all you could ever want.

Take 'em to Long Beach, they buy just as many as they sell.

Honestly, dealers are your best bet for coins like you describe. Even if slabbed, common date MS62 Morgans are gonna sell for little more than melt, even to private collectors. Raw, it's almost a certainty. And only a few will want them.

You can get more for better date/mints, but that's about it.

Your best bet is to post them up here for sale and let people buy them one at a time.

Problem is he has around 1K of them. If it were me, and I wanted to sell these all at once, I'd contact GC and sell them on their site. Whatever didn't sell, I'd try eBay or coin site money marketplaces. The chore is properly photographing that many coins.

Good luck Red Llama. I wish you well in selling them.

When I sold my entire Morgan collection a few years back, I was extremely careful. First, you don't want to advertise to the average person that you have an entire Morgan collection, inasmuch as you're talking big money if it is in decent grade MS (and a few AU coins for the impossible dates). You contact a very limited circle of high-end collectors and dealers who are willing to pay top prices for quality coins in a complete series. This is the way not to waste your own time, and make yourself vulnerable to a scam. Believe me, if you make it known to superior dealers and some highly specialized collectors that you have a registry set quality group of Morgans to be moved, your best bet is finding an honest, high end, sincere dealer to act as liaison. Doug is right on the dealer aspect. As regards selling for "a bit more than melt," if they're good quality, that simply isn't true, if you are selling a whole set as a unit. A full set of MS Morgans, with 89CC, 93s, 1884s and 1895s as AU will sell rapidly to a high end collector for good money.

I agree, if good quality coins were what we are talking about.

But they aren't good quality, for that isn't what the OP said he had. He said - MS62 level type coins. Thus my response.

I would agree, if the whole set is around MS 62 for the commons. I would kind of think that some of the easier dates would be 63-65 and the more difficult dates less than that. Hard to tell without seeing them. A full set of Morgans at MS 62 would be $325,000 (that would be all of them, which isn't likely in about 8 dates) and about $80,000 in AU 55 as per PCGS). I have seen nice sets go for much more, and mine was definitely not cheap when I sold it.

I'm in CA and like Morgans, but have no interest in buying a ton of them in bulk. I think you'll find most others are of the same mind.

There is some discussion that this might be a complete set, but the OP never mentions that this is a complete set. Rather, he states that he owns a complete set and that these are 950-extra coins.

Ahh, that is a horse of a different color, Tom. As you said, bulk Morgans are nothing special in terms of sales. I probably misunderstood the OP's intention--if he were selling a complete set, that is a horse of a different color than a few extra generic Morgans. You are quite right!
