Just an idea, but, if one was to conduct a poll, one might pm the photos to individuals asking only their opinion. That way no one could simply agree with the 1st poster. I don't believe that happens here at all, but it's prevalently seen on at least one other forum (that's managed by a tpg) I visit.
Really, I am going to do what some members do on occasion and take a break from these forums. It really is not productive getting followed from thread to thread by a (probable) geezer and wasting time over that. I am better off lifting weights and hitting on women. The strange thing over this is that I had that feeling in my gut that BUncirculated was the type of guy PMing about me behind my back. It really is creepy, and it shows that maybe I need to cut back my time here. It's disturbing to me that he is not the only one like that around here.
The "cheap camera" likely has little to do with it; it is a mere tool and gives results that are a reflection of the person using it. The first digital I purchased for coin imaging was a 0.3mp (or perhaps it was 1.3), had a horrid fixed plastic lens, and cost many hundreds of dollars at that time, but once leaning its limitations and how to use it, even this POS was able to provide more than suitable results; with a little effort, I am quite certain that you can do the same in spite of of the camera's price or quality. First, please realize that not everyone sets their individual opinion to the same standard, so even though you may feel there is undergrading here, to what are you measuring against? Each TPG can have different standards for different coins, and at times do not follow their own standards, so who's wrong and who is right? Perhaps I am mistaken, but it seems as if you view this supposed "undergrading" as a negative even though there is nothing wrong with setting one's standards to a more conservative level, and those who do are the ones who usually end up with superior collections. Now, as for your view of this forum, you must understand that there are many different levels of experience represented here, so are you going to place the same weight in someone who is likely repeating the opinions given by others, or those simply shooting from the hip as you would more experienced member, or perhaps someone whose livelihood depends on sound judgment calls? Only so much can be told from images, and this is especially true when they are poorly taken, so how do you plan to account for this? Trying to grade using whatever photos are provided can be a crapshoot, so judging the opinions based on them is an exercise in futility. Instead of concocting a plan to prove your suspicion, perhaps the time spent would be better used to improve on and/or tweak your own grading skills; this way, you will not need or care about the opinions given on this or any other forum. After all, if a collector, your opinion is the only one that should matter.
I agree you have it in hand , what do you think it grades . Also why not take some straight on shots , they can't be worse than the 1st set of pics .
I really take offense at you calling someone a geezer . How old are you ? I try to treat everyone on these forums with respect and hate it when someone puts another down . So you have a beef with someone , that happens all the time in crowds , all people aren't going to get along that's life , and maybe when you've lived long enough you'll realize that . I'm proud of the knowledge that I have recieved over the 60+ years I've been alive . So why don't you treat all with the respect you want from others , you just might get it .
Doug, I believe @jon12 was recommending that he self grade it. Especially if the purpose of this thread is to judge the capabilities of the membership rather than simply asking for a general consensus on a coin. @jolumoga I have read threads in which you participated. I believe you have even earned a like or two from me (maybe I'm wrong about that) so don't think for a minute that I am following you around the forum nipping at your heels. I just don't like the roundabout way you are going about using me as a guinea pig in your little experiment. It puts me off to answering your question because I don't feel as if you even care about the answer I may give.
I think what the OP didn't realize is grading is completely impossible with fuzzy photos. The best that can be realized is a low grade. Om a Peace dollar we need to see the high points of the coin, count strands of hair, check the feathers on the eagle's wing and the leg, look for wear and stuff like that. A fuzzy pic means we don't see what we need to see, so a low grade results. Or the grader can abstain from trying until better pics are available. Were this an online auction, I would pass on this coin as experience has taught me fuzzy photos are often deliberate and hide things a buyer doesn't wish to see. So I would pass and go to the coin with sharp photos, even if the sharper photo sometimes has a higher price.
To be honest, even with the very best pics there are, all you can do is to guess at the grade. Sure if you're good at interpreting pics (and few are) you can even get pretty close a lot of the time. But without seeing a coin in hand it's always gonna be just a guess.
I apologize for using the word geezer. I was addressing BUncirculated, who has been following me around and trying to derail my threads. I will put him on ignore. I falsely assumed, as a young person, that many participants were like BUncirculated and was wondering if I should just stop posting in this forum altogether, thinking that it's not for young people. The comment that I would use the guesses here as a basis for comparison was made off-the-cuff and was not meant to be serious. I was in a carefree mood when I posted it and did not intend to receive lengthy replies. As for the grades given here, I appreciate them. I showed Randy Campbell of ICG the coin and he responded that it is approximately AU details, with a corroded reverse. He basically agreed with GDJMSP that it is worth about $75-80. That just goes to show, depite the poor quality of the pics, GDJMSP knows what he's talking about.
OK, I appreciate the feedback. Please understand that that comment was made off-the-cuff and I did not mean to put you on the spot. I am not judging anyone here, except for a member who has derailed 2 of my threads.
This is a good point. And I also accept that I may be at fault for the poor pics, not the camera. I will keep that in mind. Maybe I will search or ask for some tips for future threads. I am relatively new to the hobby, so I may be somewhat unaware of just how critical the pics are for approximate grading. In total I have been collecting for a little more than 2 years, so I still have a lot to learn. It is true that my own grading could use some work.
Just so you know, BUUncirculated was trying to help you, just like I was - not derail your threads. Also, I'm one of those geezers, just like he is. Nonetheless, this forum is for everybody, young and old. And a great many of the old spend a great deal of time trying to help the young. And we get some who are very young, I think the youngest member we ever had was 5. And there are currently a great many teenagers who are members. And a large number in their 20's. What you have to realize is that while what is posted may not seem like help, it is. But it is often said with a brutal honesty so it doesn't seem like it is. I'm one of those brutally honest people myself, it's the only way I know how to be. And yes I am that way in person too. But I will spend years trying to help a single person and teach them about this hobby. I have done it many times, with both young and old. There was one young boy that I started teaching when he was only 8. Eventually he even became a moderator of this forum. I continued until he was into his 20's, he got married, and went on with his life. He got to the point where he was teaching people. That's what makes it all worthwhile
I don't think it's helpful when a person says they will ignore you because you are a swindler, and then works to undermine you behind the scenes with PMs to others. Don't you think that behavior is questionable? Maybe in person he is a nice guy, though. Maybe the internet brings out the worst side in some people.
Never said that about you, ever. Actually, all I said was someone from this forum sent me a link to the thread. I never said it was in a PM, email, or carrier pigeon, only that I received the link from another member. I can think of hundreds of Marine recruits who thought the opposite of this analogy of me until they realized why I was tough on them. Possibly, but not in this case.
Alright. You responded in a respectful manner. Let's bury the hatchet and move on. I just don't think we should be too quick to judge others when we are only communicating via electronic devices rather than in person. At the coin show today, I pretty much got along with everyone. Maybe this would have never happened if we met in real life.
My judgement was based on what YOU posted. Nothing more. It wasn't done to be mean to you, but hopefully to teach you, who admittedly has little experience in this hobby, something about the situation you posted about. Myself, and many others on this forum have much knowledge and experience to pass on to newbies to our hobby. It pays to open your mind and want to learn from us.
I agree. Especially GDJMSP. His posts carry a lot of value for not only members of this forum but also for people who use the search engines to learn about coins. I learned a bit from him through Google at first.
