Where to buy *legit* trade dollars?

Ok. I think I've learned my lesson. I will do more research before I buy again, and I will only buy slabbed/graded coins of this type.

But I have heard that they are even counterfeiting PCGS slabs, etc. If that is the case, what is safe?

JUst research the slab number usually their sound be no problem their are fake slab coins but it is not that common !!

 

How do you research the slab number? Can you look it up on the TPG 's website or call/email them?

It is right no both of ngc and pcgs website's it says check cert number ! Then type it in and if it is good it will come up !!

 

Any reputable dealer will guarantee the coin and slab and you can always go through the coin auctions I've bought several trade dollars at heritage

 

I respectfully disagree, and would advise the OP to not rely solely on cert numbers. If simply trying in a cert number means the coin is good, can you explain this:

i was not saying just to go off that i was saying that is a good way to get a lot of the "spam" out of your way. Of course you have to compare the images of the coin to the images provided if it looks clean back off the coin. i also think that this gentleman is looking for a lower grade of say maybe a f-vf . Correct me if i am wrong ?? but in those grades you are not really going to have to worry to much about fakes like the one above ! Also i am figuring the second coin is the fake !!

I really hate those counterfeiters . Plus I don't see why PCGS and NGC won't go after these sleaseballs and if they are why isn't it working .

 

Probably the same reason why the Nigerian scams persist. The host country.

 

I gotta a say that's a gd good fake not holding it in hand seems as tho trades and early dollars are their favorite things to fake unfortunately their 2 of the main thing I collect good news is as a 30 year collector and as a restoration specialist on furniture and houses my eye is trained to spot the slightest off details of. Color and form but I will never buy a trade or early dollar sight unseen unless from someone very reputable all my trades and early dollars I've bought over the Internet came from either ha or stacks

 

Maybe we should start sending them a bunch of fake jade or something they truly value and they'll stop treating it as an industry .

amen to that I don't know if any of the rest of you attend non coin auctions but being a dealer of early Americana as well as a coin collector I go to many auctions and the orientalia is the hottest thing there is something I know nothind about my specialty is 18th c American furniture as well as American folk art but I can't count the number of auctions I see some piece of oriental porcelain or art that is estimated 3-500 or so that brings 25000 or even 6 figures and sells to someone bidding overseas let's start making fake orientalia and letting Chinese buyers overpay buying sight unseen and get stuck with it would be fair for all the fake coins carvings garden statuary and 10,000 other things they've faked

Here is a nice one on eBay from a dealer I know. It is a no problems coin (undoubtedly dipped at one time, but probably not mechanically cleaned), and you can be 99% sure that it is genuine. Notice the slight price difference (lol) :

A few of the auction houses have nice Trade Dollars up for auction now, but they are even pricier than this one in VF-XF condition. So, if you want a nice Trade Dollar that is authentic,and not cleaned unmercifully, you have to pay the price. $300 or more is not unusual for ANY nice common date Trade Dollar right now,

Pick a year, then click on shop or check out the far right screen. Beware of counterfeit slab coins. Check out the number against the registry and be sure the one pictured is the one PCGS remembers.
