I drove 1 hour, 45 minutes in the snow/ice to get to an auction today. It was held at a farmer's house and there were a lot of farm equipment, tools, knick-knacks and vehicles. Also, there was a good selection of coins for sale including gold and silver. I decided to trek it to the auction to see what I could get (actually, the only reason I went was because of a 1995 & 1996 Proof Set that would be auctioned...silly, I know!) The auction was held in a small, non-heated barn building on the premises (by the way, temp was 25 degrees!) Anyway, once the bidding began, I found that I was one of 10 people bidding on the coins. All I wanted was the proof sets and a few ASEs but I decided to watch the prices on the other items and jump in if it was a deal. Here's what I got and how much I paid...how'd I do? Three Proof Sets (1994, 1995, 1996)...I paid $17.50 for all three. Four 1997 American Standing Eagle Coins (Business Strikes)...I paid $110 for all four. Columbus Quincentenary Jubilee Coin Set (not US Mint issued)...I paid $200 for it Decorative Box Coin has no precious metal markings Coin has markings of "1/10 oz fine gold" Coin has markings of "1/10 oz fine platinum" Can anybody verify if these are silver, gold and/or platinum? It didn't come with the paperwork. The only website that I found with this coin set was here: http://www.reedededge.com/primarycategory.php?TYPE=bullion&TITLE=BULLION RELATED ITEMS ...and...one more coin...see below!
I think you did the best on the $10 gold. It will probably go MS69 or better , kind of hard to tell from your pic.
You did well on the ASEs and really well on the AGE. The three piece set is not a set of coins, but a set of privately issued rounds. The large piece is one ounce silver so you have about $280+ in bullion value in the group.
Is the group you're referring to the 3-piece group or all the coins listed? I assume you mean the Columbus coins, correct?
Yes, I wasn't clear. The $280+ in bullion value is for the set of three privately issued Columbus tokens; they are not coins.
The platinum and gold pieces each say they are one-tenth ounce fine gold and the Reeded Edge site you linked states that the other piece is silver.
Can I believe the markings and the site? I wish I knew what company minted the coins so I could do more research. Thank you for your help.
Well worth the freeze. Great deals not to mention the experience...auction in a barn at 25F...amazing.
I did find this: http://stacksbowers.com/auctions/AuctionLegacyLot.aspx?LegacyLotID=86341 StacksBowers lists the coins as silver/gold/platinum. I trust Stacks/Bowers more than ReededEdge.com. Found this too: https://www.proxibid.com/asp/LotDet...hristopher-Columbus---Connoisseur-s-Proof-Set
Update...I decided to sell the gold/platinum coins on ebay (since I couldn't find a buyer here on CoinTalk). Here's how I did: 1994 $10 American Gold Eagle: Paid $275...sold for $362.99 + $5.80 shipping Columbus Jubilee 3-Coin Set: Paid $200...sold for $334.00. Summary: Paid $475.00 Sold: $702.79 Ebay Fees: $69.70 PayPal Fees: $20.98 Shipping: $27.20 Profit: $109.91. I'm sure there would have been a better (cheaper) way to ship but I wanted to add insurance as well as signature confirmation on both of these items. Not great but not bad.
