There were several varieties of the 1859 Canadian large cent. I have a Guardmaster album which has four openings for 1859. First is the "narrow nine" which I think is considered the normal one. Next is the 9 over 8 [wide 9]. Third is the double punch narrow 9 #1, then the double punch narrow 9 #2.
The nar 9 DP #1 is the most expensive and I don't have that one.
There are more varieties but my album just calls for the above four.
The 1858 and 1859 coins were struck for the Province of Canada.
In 1867 several Brittish colonies and Canadian provinces joined together to become the Dominion of Canada.
It wasn't until 1876 that the first cents were struck for the Dominion.
They made so many cents in 1858 and 1859 that it took until 1876 to use up the stock on hand.

Your coin is a common one, repunching of the 8 and 5 are often seen. The coin looks cleaner as well. But, the second photo has me wondering if it is a 'Bold 9' type. Bill in Burl should chime in shortly, and he'll say for sure...

Oh ... so many working dies and so many breaking and so many slightly repunched ... it's too much to ask to find a perfect one so what to do; what to do? Repunches of the 5&8 are fairly common and I think that the bottom of the one is a tad offset as well. At least on this one, the guy with the hammer got the 9 perfect a few times in a row.
