I would simply not pay for it, informing the seller that it was discovered to be a fake. Since a buyer can't receive negative feedback, that would settle the matter.
Did he ever reply with the weight ? Though weight doesn't tell you everything , if it's off it's fake . I'd really like to know if they used coin silver ,in this case .925 pure sterling , also the weight should be 11.78 g . This fake would fool most people especially who don't know the series . Still there are telltale signs on all fakes we should learn before buying the coins .
Cant you just cancel your bid with the reason 'bid in error' or say your baby brother clicked on it by mistake..? If its cleaned, then he wont have a leg to stand on and it'll be cancelled by paypal/ebay anyway.....I wouldnt worry, just dont pay if you decide somethings up! He cant leave a buyer negative feedback.
Yeah I couldn't though...as I mentioned before..Ebay wouldn't let me because by the time I wanted to retract, it had already been less than 12hrs till time was up (and you cannot retract within that frame supposedly).
Yeah fair enough. And since he has that return policy of 7 days I just stopped caring about retracting the bid...I mean I think this is a good enough argument - "possibly cleaned and more importantly possibly a FAKE" haha. I think it'll turn out okay!
Great great ! Thank you very much for those pieces of advice. They definitely make sense to look out for - I just didn't know until now : P Thanks - I'll be keeping all that in mind for every future buy!
Oh wow thank you so much for that, sir. And thanks for the link - I will contact him for more information. This is good news though, since I can definitely, 100% get out of this buy.
Thank you sir...I will be contacting you for some more information on the matter of fake coins (especially NFLD). I don't wana get myself in this again !!
No...the guy has not replied to me AT ALL. Maybe he's all pissed off because we, the coin detectives, of cointalk have found him out. : o
Wow ... is nuthin' sacred anymore?!! => counterfeit "Newfie" coins!!? ... geessh, haven't the poor ol' Newfies already had enough problems without somebody jeopardizing their number one industry?!! (good ol' silver Newfie coins!!) ashikunn ... I sure hope that this turns-out to be nothing but a valuable learning (I am hoping that your transaction merely dissolves and no funds are transferred) => great catch, coin-fellas! (man, that is definitely one of the major benefits of collecting coins "in a pack-mentality", eh? ... sadly, I myself would never have spotted that coin as a fake) great thread in the end ... but for different reasons than originally planned!!
Oh definitely different reasons than intended ! haha....but yes thank you all. It's great to have all of you as coin collecting mentors !!!
What happened with the listing, has it been removed by ebay? Can't access the link to the auction anymore. Coin looked weird to me but could not draw the conclusion based only on some pictures. Pics sometimes can be deceiving. The seller seems to have great feedback and other coins (s)he's selling seem genuine. Can you explain why this coin is a fake, maybe a side-by-side comparison fake/genuine. What is the weight of fakes like that, and what are they made of? I have never owned a coin from NFLD but years of experience make me have a good eye at spotting fakes.
Yes I think Mike Marshall had this listing removed, as the consensus was that it was fake. I tried to ask the seller a bunch of questions about cleaning, the weight etc. but got no response. And yes he does seem genuine and probably is...I had a look through his other listings and he had some other good coins (graded too). So maybe this was just a one off and he did not realize himself that it was fake...not really sure though because, in hand, I feel like one with any sort of experience would question...and it seems that he did not. Also he had it posted for a price much lower than any other seller for that grade...that struck me as kind of fishy as well..
Mike is one of the good ones all right , he single handedly got all counterfeit coins off of ebay Canada or was it all out of Canada itself . He's also one heck of a good person and a very good dealer with fair prices . WTG Bro !!!!!
If you knew Mike personally, as I do... you would see me laughing at that comment... a vigilante indeed!!!
