Hey everyone - just bought this 1881 50 cent newfoundland coin off of ebay for $100.00.
I was hoping to get a VF - XF grading for this one. With that, the trend would be $260 - $800ish.

What do you guys think ? Did this newbie do good?!
Oh and sorry these are the only pictures that I have right now...I know they are a bit far out

Let me know your thoughts if you have any~~

I don't know much about Canadian coins. It appears XF details (cleaned). Not sure how that might affect price. Still, looks like a nice pickup...Congrats!

Are you able to return it? Of course that is your decision whether you want to or not but I agree with yakpoo that it has been cleaned.

    Thanks

IMO it looks as if someone tried to artificially age this coin, make it seem old, is the weight correct on this coin?

I don't actually have the coin in hand yet so I couldn't say yet..

Ahhh...I'm not sure if I can cancel my bid now..there's only about 7 hours left. Do you think that this type of cleaning would diminish the value by a lot ?

Yeah probably + it could be a fake wcoins is right if someone was trying to artificially age this coin it would probably be because its a fake (lol were like detectives :))

But then again it looks real definetly cleaned but it could be real so I don't know the decision is yours

Hahah detectives. And I have contacted the seller explaining that my team of coin collectors reviewed the coin and determined that it has most likely been cleaned. I asked him if I could cancel the transaction as I am still an amateur and made a mistake to bid without being sure. So I guess we will see what happens..
If I end up with it, I'll be sure to post some better pictures and we can continue the investigation ;]

Could you ask him how much it weighs . The design looks ok , but I hardly know the series as I have just 2 New Foundland Halves an 1882 H and a 1899 both in about F-12 -15 . The fields look awfully clean , it should weigh about 11.6 grams . Also where her chin meets her neck looks weak , hope I'm wrong .

Okay thanks for the info - I will definitely ask him that....as soon as he answers me. I've sent him a couple messages in the past few hours but no responses yet, and the auction ends early tmrw morning.

How did you buy the coin if there is sill time left in the auction? Someone else may bid more that you. Am I missing something?

No, I haven't technically won the item yet but there has been zero bids until I bid. I have also seen the coin up for auction before and I think it was re-posted. Maybe people realized the cleaning issues etc. and were not inclined to buy. I have a lot to learn lol.

Anyway I just have a gut feeling that no one's going to bid - if they do, that would be swell but I doubt it.

Maybe no one is bidding because they see it's a cleaned coin, too? ;)

You know the old saying, though...don't count your chickens before they hatch...

Yeah that's riiiiiiight ! And definitely agree with you on that they probably saw something fishy about it. I knew it was too good to be true that no one else was bidding at all...and that's the reason why I posted it up on here. I should have waited for all of you coin collecting veterans to give me opinions before I went ahead and bid...bad move on my part
