Or could it be nail polish. I can't tell with the altered photos. Soak it in acetone and see if it comes off.

If it was sintered of something like that would acetone mess it up? I dont have any right now would you advise use of a steamcleaner I was going to try that but im not sure if i should! collecters or dealers like uncleaned coins right ? how long should i soak for? what if i use scub free bathroom cleaner on it. what about hydrogen peroxide.

The coin looks black/dull to your eyes. I always used to save black coins then spend um. Now this one is even more interesting since i put it on the scanner.

Pure acetone will not alter any legitimate error at all and is acceptable. Do not use bathroom cleaner or peroxide.

    dsmith23 Gotta get 'em all

Don't use anything but 100% pure acetone, not even fingernail polish remover .

If you look close the ''black" surface is rusting in the red area which makes me think it is the annealing or something. All kinds of colors can show up on overbaked coins.

It looks like it was overcooked with another coin on top on the NE reverse and it was face down So the top of the reverse had a coin on top creating a low oxegen area where the metal turned redish colors in the NW reverse and face down obverse.

No. There would be NO silverish coloring. It would be a uniform shade of black and retain mint luster. This is a nickel, worth 5 cents.

It would be all black. The fact that you can see any silver means it is not a black beauty. It's just really dirty.

Any reason you are still posting pics of this coin?

No, I didn't find it in the ground. I have had it a long time and just now looked at it closely.

?So if i dip it in acetone and the black and red doesn't come off would that mean there is a better chance this could be a sintered/overcooked coin.

Anyone want to take a guess about what might happen after i soak it in acetone.

Would a collecter be more or less interested in it after i clean it with acetone or would they be more interested as is?
