wouldnt life be boring if we all liked the same stuff, and wouldnt coins be expensive too!! Nice to speak again TIF. YOC
They are in individual flips, most with old paper envelopes, most with an emperor's name and little else-- and I wouldn't trust that scant info to be correct. Looks like it may be a somewhat old collection, from the 50's and 60's. To take a group picture I'd have to take each out, put them together, then back into their flips... too much hassle for a group picture. I'll take a preliminary look at them this weekend and take individual pictures of anything that looks promising. There are a few that are better. I sure was hoping for more Greeks-- I enjoy tracking down their attribution much more than for LRBs.
TINF when you get burned, sorry to hear they took advantage of you, i would call and getem' a ear full, but you are batting 950 on everything else. All your other coins are top drawer... Hope you get something awesome to recoup your costs.. you are a rock star...
I don't think they took advantage of me. I simply took a gamble and it did not pan out. Although I do think their estimate of conditions are off (as well as estimated value). And the wording was misleading. But hey, no one held a gun to my head and made me bid.
Hey! Eng as a Manitoban I take offense to that! We Manitoban's aren't all that bad. It is once you get a little further North in Steve's area. That's where things start going a little bit weird.
My bad, Northern Manitoba...Whiz4 i was just trying to get a rise out Steve...you guys are the best...
I can not imagine how the seller could have done more to suggest you not bid except to have changed the order of the listing to mention the Romans first. Such lots should be bought by people who have taken the opportunity to examine them in person and will usually sell to someone who has unless there is nothing of merit there. If there were sleepers there, you would have been outbid. Not knowing how much you paid places us at a disadvantage but I do believe you need to show us the specific coins mentioned (particularly the Athens and the Pompey)before saying you were burned. I can not imagine bidding on a lot described as "Several pieces with rough or tooled surfaces." I assume the Pompey was tooled. Many are. The aftercast Paduan would probably bring $30 most places and $60 from a big seller. I have the Lawrence catalog of these but it is not illustrated. Many old medals are termed Paduans even though there were other medalists than Cavino living in other cities making them to fill the needs of the market of their day. The lot has all the marks of the remainders of a 1960's grandpa's holdings after they separately lotted any coins worth owning. We all have junk accumulated over the years by being silly. Now you do, too. Maybe we should all trade unseen garbage lots but the only winner there would be the Post Office.
For the record, I agree that many LRB's are both numerous and a bit 'bereft'. However, Greek bronzes are equally numerous and often quite ordinary. I have had more trouble identifying the worst of these than any other coins I have owned.
Maybe the same thing happened that happened to you and me Jerry. I can just imagine it happening. BTW welcome YOC
bummer TIF! but hey, you never know, you may enjoy that lot more than you think. after the initial disappointment wears off, you may have some fun figuring out what those coins are. would be a nice activity for a spell when you have to go on the wagon. heck, make a thread of them when you've got some down time. I'd like to see them. hey YOC!
Yes, as I said, it was a gamble, a gamble I've taken before (on lots with similar language) and until this one I had been pleased. It was a risk and this time it didn't turn out in my favor. As for assuming I would have been outbid if there were sleepers, that's presumptuous, and the admonishing tone of your post was unnecessary. I had already laid the blame on myself, why pile on? To reiterate, no one held a gun to my head and forced me to bid. I took a gamble and this time it wasn't worth it. Now I have a bunch of coins which at best might be fun to attribute, but I could've had the same fun with a random inexpensive uncleaned eBay lot-- at least for the bulk of this group. I'll probably liquidate most of these and recycle the money... probably not on another mixed lot, at least not one from Stack's or one I haven't seen (or had a delegate see). I will post the Athens and the Pompey eventually, along with any coins which turn out to be interesting.
Here's the Athens New Style tet. Not great, not horrible. I haven't begun to research this for attribution nor do I even know if it is real.
