Hi everyone, I am wondering if you think this coin could pull off a grading of XF...? Let me know your thoughts ! Thanks a lot. 1881 Newfoundland 50 cent 2.JPG 1881 Newfoundland 50 cent.JPG

I don't see anything near Xf, I would grade it at F at best.

I'll give ya a "VF" (I think the photo is merely reflecting light, so the coin probably looks better in hand)

I have to agree with the others above. I prefer the 1899 you posted a bit more than this one. The non-bust side looks to be quite banged up -- was it cleaned you think? The area around "50 Cents" looks very hairlined to me.

    I'd grade this one "F".

That was my thinking as well about the possible cleaning..
Thanks for your input - always appreciated, sir.

I agree it is a fine coin...but it probably doesn't make it to VF.

The denticles remain distinct. No wear is evident. Much more on the Queens hair but still, I think this more worthy than 'fine'.............

You know what, green, yeah I think you're right. The light kinda threw me off...I think this one goes VF. No XF though.

I could probably also see it going VF. All of that chatter and the lines around the "50 Cent" really comes off as harsh to my eye. It could just be the lighting.

Nonetheless, even if you throw an AG coin at me with Victoria on it, you'll have to pry it from my hands. :D

After looking at a few examples in the PCGS registry set, yes, this coin would grade VF-35 to XF-40, but I digress, if it was sent to PCGS, it might come back as 'genuine'...

Is that the ruler by which you judge all things relevant? ;) NGC would probably grade it VF-20 or VF-details (as it properly should be).

No... if anything, NGC and PCGS have historically overgraded NFLD silver coins in circulated grades, sometimes badly so. I still don't like how NGC grades NFLD silver coins, and yes I know the series.

Here are a few NGC VF-30 - which I don't necessarily agree with.

My mistake is that I assumed the original poster was from the US, and I was trying to think in PCGS grades. I see now that the poster is from Ontario, so I'll give my opinion on what I think ICCS would grade this coin.

As for being a NFLD 50-cent, by Canadian standards, we know that these coins were often weakly struck, but with the level of detail in the braid, the eye, the hair above the wreath and the high points on the reverse, ICCS would probably grade the OP's coin VF-30.

Some examples, and compare them to the NGC examples:
