Believe it or not i have been picking some amazing coins at a local jewelry store that buys alot of coins and bullion. He doesnt let me buy individual morgans but i can buy by the roll at a very solid price. Anyway this is maybe the third best coin i have found out of the many rolls. I am having a tough time grading though but sometimes I get liberal when i find these nicer coins. My head is saying au58 slider type of coin but i wanted to see if it has enough to grade in ms. For those of you who know morgans there is a big jump from au-60 for this date/mm
There appears to be too much wear on the obverse........hair, leaves, cotton bolls & cap........to warrant an MS grade. I'm thinking AU55......maybe AU58. Chris
Yeah cpm i agree sometimes the more i look at something i convince myself it is better than it is haha
Chris, the thing that always gets me is that on rotating there is no luster break. Maybe its because its a san fran issue and theyre dripping in luster as it is
Not even vaguely close to MS. There is a fair amount of wear, both on the obverse and reverse in high points. The very rough surface of the obverse shows not just the usual Morgan bag marks, but legitimate wear. Low grade AU--I'd do with AU 50. Not a slider, as there isn't any way that it would grade MS on any given day. That is a conditional rarity date, and there aren't that many MS coins of that date floating around.
Sorry guys i wasnt totally honest but i have to say i have posted numerous coins on here and the people who seem most sure are usually the farthest off. And usually cpm nails it on the head.lol.
And i apologize again if i lied a bit but i was kind of doing a little experiment to see how opinionated grading really is. I posted a 1894-o morgan a while ago on here and was told with certainty it was an au coin dont waste my money . I gambled and it was ms61 graded. All i can say is if you have a feeling about a coin u may want to take a shot at ngc or pcgs pictures just blur much of a coins appeal
So why waste our time and ask. Just send it off if you don't like opinions. MS 61 coins are just as easily AU 58 on any given date.
Morgan dude... This is the thing. Im not gonna send it anymore. Are you mad because you sounded so confident in your OPINION and are suprised a tpg graded au58. This is my point here the reason i did this is because i read a thread a day or two ago where people were tearing a coin apart yet by doing so and stating ur opinion with the attitude that you are completley right may discourage someone from making a good decision. And especially since you were so far off in your grading maybe you should brush up before giving your opinion and making it sound like you KNOW
And an au58 has wear . A ms61 does not. The difference in $ was $600 so there is a definite difference. And if they were the same then you saying this coin was no where close to ms would be totally false if au58 and 61 were same on any given day.
That's not entirely true. I've seen some MS60 and 61 with enough wear that they should have had an AU58 label on them.
Oh i agree BU i was just making a point. Although according to grading guidlines there should be no trace of wear on a 60 coin. But again i agree BU Thats why i also asked if this was an upgradeable coin because you do see some coins overgrade.
No, you're not making any points--you are just disparaging our grading skills. As I said, if you want to have a coin graded to get a TPG opinion, do so. However, everybody thought the coin was AU--perhaps the other variable might be your poor photograph, inasmuch as the difference between AU 58 and MS 61 on any day could be one tiny rub that most people don't even see. I tend to doubt that you owned two such high end conditional rarities in the first place--coins like an 1894o and an 1883s that are MS are almost never seen out of a slab, due to the value. The entire story smells like a rat to me.
Morgan dude you should change your name because the stuff you are saying is sounding like anger and not intellect. did you really just go at my photos? Heres one to compare so u can brush up its from pcgs photograde of an au50 please compare it to my picture .
From the images, I would have graded it 50 or 55. It's good to know I stand a chance of being insulted if I offer an opinion on a coin you post. Dear god.
