Snagged this one off ebay for about $50 (plus shipping, came to about $53). Looks like an AG example, date clearly visible. Did I do ok on the price? And could anyone help me attribute it or direct me to a site where I can try attributing it myself? Thanks, Simon
Clear date, a bit worn, but a solid candidate. I think you're undergrading the coin - a solid G4. It looks like it has something growing on it...
Nice coin I don't see the 1797 ones that often (I don't have one either) I'd call it a g-4 too at least the obverse and it looks pretty clean not nearly as pitted as most early ones seem to be I'd say $50 was a very good buy is the 1797 stems reverse but beyond that I'm not sure of the die varsity shouldn't be too hard to figure out as its easy to make out
It is a S-137, not the most common, but not exactly rare. Finally my copy of Penny Wise has justified it self!
Rarity number? I would guess something like R2? Thanks! Edit: just looked it up and R2 (D2) it is. Thanks for the help.
My 1976 copy has it as R3, but that's probably out of date. There are ten R3s and below, out of 32 varieties listed, including NCs
Nice addition. I have seen this called VG Details, but the condition definitely nets out about AG. This variety is often confused with the S-120 a or b because of the date spacing, but is readily identified as soon as the reverse is examined with the S-120 having several triplet leaves while the S-137 has doublets. Some of the weakness of the reverse is due to buckling of the dies rather than wear or damage.
No, but I'll let you guys know when it arrives. Hopefully it's something that can at least be partially treated by either verdi-care or acetone.
It looks like just surface growth not something that's attacked the metal hope it comes off will make it a very nice coin if it does
Hmmm...I think $25 might be a bit low, even in a coin this grade. I'm not sure if the black marks are corrosion or something else. At any rate, sold listings for the price I got this for show coins of significantly less caliber...I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a coin like this for only $25.
correct me if i am wrong, but wasn't it you who has many times made claims that many coins, including better, higher value coins than the example that you posted, sell for less than $25.00 on ebay? i guess because it is your coin, then it is worth more?
by the way, is anybody else getting AT&T advertisements taking control of the computer and making it impossible to browse websites, such as ebay, cointalk, and many others?
Putting a value on a problem coin is nothing but a guess. It's going to be worth different amounts to different people. $25 is too low for this coin.
