I recently bought this dime with the ability to return it. I have been searching for a nice 1913 S Barber dime. The details look like it could grade as an XF. The seller said it had been sitting in a manilla envelope for about 30 years, which is the reason for the very dark tone. I really want a graded one and thought if I could buy a raw one cheaper, I would get it graded. My question is, do you think PCGS or NGC would grade this ok without a details grade, and if so, what do you think it would grade? The color in the pic is the actual color of the coin, very dark.
Save yourself a lot of grief and buy one that's already slabbed by a reputable TPG. What will you do if this one doesn't grade? Can you get your money back -- guaranteed!!! Don't forget to add the cost of slabbing along with S&H both directions to the cost of the coin. Are you still saving money?
It looks like an xf and I don't think it would have a problem making grade I see legit mint luster in the crevices and I don't see any of the signs of altered color actually I like the toning and color I'd keep it and get it graded or just enjoy it raw
Looks like old album toning around the edges before it was in the envelope too another sign it looks problem free
Don't be penny wise and pound foolish; send it back and buy one already graded. If you are asking these questions in this thread then you are setting yourself up for disappointment.
I don't feel the images are going to get you a good answer as to if it would grade. There are too many of these out there for me to risk trying to get a raw one in a good holder.
The problem is, finding these already graded. They are extremely hard to find. I would easily prefer a graded one, but they hardly come around. I look on lots of auction sites and dealer sites all the time. Thats why I thought maybe I could score a raw one cheaper and get it graded. The pic for this coin was bad, and sometimes you can score a good coin for cheap because others wont look at it, and sometimes you lose. Luckily I have a 14 day return policy on it. If any of you have one graded a VF25 or so, let me know. They are pretty scarce. I just wanted opinions on if it would grade, not be told I should have bought a graded one already.
OK, but you need to realize they are trying to give you the best advice they can. As for your question, I don't know, I think it's kind of iffy myself.
There are thumbnail pics posted in the original post. They look dark, but thats the actual color. This is pics of coin in hand. The one on the site was even worse.
Nice portrait, that's for sure. XF45 and I think it will grade, that is provided the coin is authentic. The denticles look kind of funky, especially near the date. Whenever I see denticles that are well defined along part of the edge, yet vague and missing detail at other areas on the same side of the coin, -well that sets off some alarm bells for me, especially when you can't explain it as uneven wear since this coin doesn't have that much circulation.
Sorry Frank, but according to every book ever written on the subject, as well as every article ever written about it - that is not true. Problem coins have no grade because they cannot be graded. Of course anybody is welcome to believe whatever they want.
I guess my problem is solved. Found a PCGS VF20. It's a lower grade than the dark one, but is still nice and already certified. Going to return the other one.
Yeah, I don't care what the flip says. He even said it was AU, but I was pretty sure that wasn't true before I bought it. I needed to get it in hand to inspect it first and get some opinions. Going to take it to a Red Book contributing coin dealer tomorrow and get his final opinion, and unless he has some really glowing reviews, I will return.
I don't quite understand how it could have been the color as in the photos as it is surely in a white 2x2 holder and yet the holder appears an orange-tan color due to bad white balance. I know it doesn't matter now, but seems odd.
White balance fixed, much better. Coin seems nice to me, but like most others said, buy one already graded. There are a few low grade examples on eBay, and you might just need to wait for an XF to come along, or reach out to some dealers here on CT.
