nickel damaged or mint error?

Good evening, all.

This nickel is definitely messed up, but I am curious about the cause. Do you see this as some sort of minting error or just damage later in it's life?

The rim is definitely pressed down over the edge lettering in places.

I apologize for just one picture, but it has been a challenging thing to get a nice photo.

Looks like it may have taken a tumble in a washer or dryer, I don't think it left the mint looking that way.

I will try to get a picture of it tonight, but the obverse is very normal looking.
