While this is not really new, Heritage started doing this over a year ago. I would like to recognize Heritage for their efforts to solve a problem that has frustrated many customers over the years. For those who have never won a coin from a Heritage Auction, they always place a sticker detailing the Auction # and Lot # on of the reverse of the slab. The problem is that when they would do this to an old NGC slab, removing the sticker resulted in removal of the NGC hologram as well. For example: But to their credit, they finally came up with a solution to the problem after all these years. Although I have known about this for some time, my recent purchase from Heritage reminded me to create this thread. Here is what Heritage has done to protect NGC Old Fatty slabs. So thank you Heritage for protecting the hologram on the NGC Old Fattys.
Good write up. I only have one NGC Type 5 No Line Fattie Slab, but I love it. And my sticker is intact (but filthy).
I wish dealers would use something like this to place a price sticker on the slab. Nothing burns my biscuits more than having to remove sticker glue from the slab.
That's a good idea on the part of Heritage. It would be even better if they extended the idea to all slabbed coins since these get banged up to all heck and back during lot viewing as the coins travel across the country in preparation for the next auction.
That's great I've screwed up the hologram on the old fatty slabs getting the heritage stickers off a couple times in the past I noticed a couple coins came in little bags but didn't pay attention til you just mentioned it I guess cause I'm always excited to see the coin in hand for the first time this is a great idea!!
It's about time! Those little slip-cases have been used for many years by some dealers shipping slabs through the mail. Chris
I've purchased quite a lot from Heritage this year and have also noticed they started using stickers with adhesive that is not so "sticky" (forgive me, only on my first cup of java). Kind of like the 3M post-it note glue. However, last week, I received a Morgan in one of NGC's edge view slabs and when peeling of the Heritage sticker, it took part of the new hologram with it. I have not had this problem before and because of that, I thought NGC was placing the hologram inside the slab on the edge view version. I learned a valuable lesson. I peeled the Heritage sticker off while the coin was still cold from sitting in the mailbox, so maybe that was part of the problem. The coin is CAC'd, so it's not an easy re-holder. I don't plan to sell the coin for a while, so it's not a huge deal, but my OCD doesn't really like the trashed hologram.
I've been buying NGC slabs from a Korean retailer (sujipbank) for about five years now. He has ALWAYS placed the slabs he sells in nice-fitting mylar envelopes with a tastefully-executed shop sticker over the flap to keep it sealed. It seems to be a common practice in Korea.
The best part about the newer NGC pronged slabs, is that it has made coins in the older holders more valuable and desirable all else being equal. The new optical quality plastic NGC offers is certainly an improvement, but the consistency of grading was better 15 years ago, hence the premium in the market place for coins slabbed back then, especially for coins in the lower mint state range (60-63)
