1964 Sealed Proof Sets

I don't know if any of the guys could do this since i am not very tech savvy. Could someone highlight in red the "extra long strand to the left with a shorter strand running parallel to the right of it about 50% of the length of the long strand." (From the website. And so far out of 7, Every single one has broken rays and what i believe to be Straight G's but no truncated serifs.

I just joined a few minutes ago and wondered if someone can tell me what the heck i have?? I'm kind of new at the whole coin thing (8 mo's) I was going through some rolls of kennedy half dollars and found a 1976 bicentennial mirror silver colored coin , the reeded edge is also mirror silver colored. I was thinking a proof but NO MINT MARK?????

The easiest diagnostic for the Accented Hair is the missing lower left serif on the I of Liberty.

 

Years ago when these were really hot, you could buy new fake envelopes.
Folks would check for the AH or for Cams and seal them back and sell them.
I used to know how to tell the fakes but it's been too long.

 

FYI: Regardless of what IPOTAD states, using the Reverse Diagnostics should not be considered until the Obverse Diagnostics have been confirmed.

The "reason" for this is that the Reverse Die was also married with Non-Accented Hair Obverse Dies.

Accented Hair Obv = ODV-001
Accented Hair Rev = RDV-001

However, RDV-001 was also used with ODV-002 (non-Accented Hair)

 

What would you guess the percentage of those with the reverse diagnostics of being an AH? It's been too long. Is russ IPOTAD?

 

I have no idea but I do know that they exist. I also know that die marriages change and the "broken ray" reverse (RDV-001) can even be found on 1964 P & D Business Strikes.

Russ was over at PCGS for many years. He was really good at spotting these on ebay from really dad images in those days. He did well using the reverse from his post. He had one heck of a collection.

 

As to the question about why the envelopes had glue on the flap when the mint wasn't sealing them, most likely they simply purchased envelopes from a manufacturer and had them printed. Typically manufacturers of envelopes make them with glue on the flap and they probably just filled the order using stock envelopes rather than make a special run without glue on the flaps. (They may have also have made the envelopes from pre-printed stock, but why bother disconnecting the equipment that applied the glue?) Also sometimes the mint DID use the glue on the flap and seal them. If someone ordered a single set the mint would sometimes just seal the envelope, address it, apply postage and mail it to the buyer.

Quite True. Russ single handedly generated a LOT of interest in this variety by his posts and actions BUT that doesn't change the fact that not every "broken ray reverse (RDV-002)" is an Accented Hair Obverse Variety and many folks have fooled themselves into believing that if the reverse has the broken rays, then it must be an Accented Hair.

I've seen sellers on eBay selling 1964-D Kennedy's that had the Broken Ray Reverse as Accented Hair Kennedy's.

 

So your telling me that even though the reverse on these proof halves have broken rays, it still might not be a accented hair, and the only way to get a 100% for sure answer is to look at the hair itself?

 

To illustrate this point you need look no further then the 1964 DDR-007 and DDR-008. Both of these CONECA Double die reverses have the “broken ray” (RDV-001) and were originally paired with an “Accented Hair” obverse (ODV-001) but during the life of the reverse die the obverse die ODV-001 was switched out to the “Normal Hair” ODV-002 die.

The marriage of the 1964 Proof DDR-007 and DDR-008 with the “Normal Hair” seem to be more readily available probably because the obverse die was switched out early in the life of the reverse die.

 

Praise the Lord I'm not an numismatist and merely a humble collector.........
