The 98-O is known for a strong strike and lots of luster. Maybe it is due to the lighting you're using, but the luster on this one seems muted.

Agreed, it doesn't have an MS look at all, AU but looks as if it's been cleaned.

You can pick up a MS64 in this grade for around $75, so unless you think it will grade above that, I would not send it to a TPG. I can't really grade from your pictures. I agree with the others that the luster seems a little muted on the obverse. There appears to be some stain above the eagles right wing on the reverse. The fields look clean enough and I couldn't see any rubs, but again, not great pictures for grading.

I agree with the luster lacking. I also see enough hits on the neck to keep out of the MS range.

AU is the highest it could get.

Save the fees, it's a keeper but in a 2x2.

AU details. Cleaned. You can see the cleaning marks--nicks and hairlines.

Just so we're clear, please understand that this is not meant to be mean, to pick on you, to be rude, etc, etc.

If you were/are not sure, the time to ask for help was before bidding. Even with return policies and buyer protections, it is bad form to bid and only after winning develop cold feet about paying, even if the seller may appreciate not having to deal with the hassle of sending and taking the return. Also, as far as I can see, there is nothing questionable about the listing, which ended last Sunday, so I am not sure what you expect the seller to say; the coin was described not as being "MS", but that in their opinion it is "AU or better" and urged potential bidders to judge for themselves using seven different photos.

Agreed! It is bad policy to "buy now and complain later". You should have done your homework, first. It's no wonder why a lot of reputable sellers have left eBay over the years because of the unfair leverage that has been afforded buyers.

I agree with Books and Chris. Not a good way to deal with folks.

There is one Ebay rule that is sacrosanct--if you have any doubts about the merchandise, questions, or don't like it, DON'T BUY IT. Once you buy it you are committed to paying for it, and complete the transaction. There is a name for people who don't pay for that which they buy--deadbeats. They ruin the system for everybody. I can understand having doubts about a coin, but certainly do your due diligence BEFORE bidding.

Let me give you an example of what is appropriate to do with eBay and an item you are not pleased with, or discover that the seller didn't necessarily act in the best of faith: I bought a iPad mini recently, from a "close out" specialist. He had great feedback, but tended to charge too much for shipping. His overall net price was lower than comparable sellers on the item, but the fact that he was shipping ground for the price of priority bothered me (I should have done more diligence, and noticed that his shipping was generally way overpriced, to make additional money).

I went ahead with the purchase, but communicated that the item should have shipped more reasonably in cost. He made an adjustment in the overall price, which was a decent accommodation. THIS WAS MY FAULT, as I should have done more diligence. However, I honored the agreement, and will give the seller positive feedback for remedying the situation to a degree. Communicate with the seller, and make arrangements. If the seller refuses to do so, re-sell the item. Same goes for coins, or any collectible. Honor your purchases, even if you made an error in judgement.

i some what agree and somewhat disagree, let say you see a coin in its last five minutes on ebay and you are unsure but think it might be good so you pay let say the price you would pay for an ms63 example. the seller has it listed at a ms63 in his listing after you win the auction you find out that the coin is an AU50 details !! So you think because the seller basically screwed up and or lied trying to screw you that this is not his fault !! i will not pay for a coin that is not what it is listed as because i would feel very bad if i had to sell it and do the same thing. i dont have the money to be paying a lier !!

If you don't have the money to take a chance on a coin sight unseen, don't bid or buy. That is why I advise people only to deal with reputable sellers on eBay where they have done substantial business, and who have good reputations. Buying a coin on eBay and not getting what you wanted is always your fault, as you have the right NOT TO BUY if you have doubts. Sorry, but that is the only way auctions can work.

The KEY here is "unsure". It is your responsibility to be as sure as is reasonably possible, and regardless of how much time remains: if you play, you pay.

But this is not what happened, so if you're talking about the listing in question, the hole you’re digging will only get deeper.

Contrary to your continued claims, the seller did not offer this coin as, nor even mentioned “MS” in the listing, so who is lying here? You bought, no, you bid on and now refuse to pay for a coin described only as being “AU or better” (221310533799). The only party that has even mentioned MS is you, but for whatever reason, you’re pointing the finger and placing all blame on the seller who, from what I can see, deserves nothing less than a sincere apology (from you).

Now, beyond that nonsense, please explain what you meant when saying: "i would feel very bad if i had to sell it and do the same thing". Are you trying to justify lying about a coin just to recoup your money, even if the blame for buying said coin rests solely upon you? Please tell me I am reading this wrong...

I will not defend sellers who fluff, but you need to understand that not everyone selling on ebay can grade; a reality that must be accepted by anyone using this venue. For the sake of discussion, I could provide a links to a couple of now ended listings where the seller did just what you’re talking about, but perhaps this is a subject better left alone.
