I was looking for a nice Rome mint Augustus coin without breaking the bank (not easy), and I recently found one. This will most likely be the last coin I purchase in 2013 so I thought it should count. This coin will sit nicely with my meager collection of Roman As(s).

    Octavian (27 BC - 14 AD)
AE As (dated. 11/12 AD )
    31.0 mm x 9.89 g
Obverse: Bare Head of Octavian Left. Latin Legend- IMP CAESAR DIVI F AVGVSTVS XX
Reverse: Latin Legend- PONTIF MAXIM TRIBVN POT XXXIIII-Legend around large SC
Ref: RIC 471, Sear 1689 (dated series)

From what I gather from my Sear book. The coin replaces the moneyer's titles with the titles of Octavian, setting the trend for later Julio-Claudian aes coinage.

All opinions, comments, additions and evaluations are appreciated and encouraged.
Oh, and I might have over paid for it, but hey, I guess we can't win them all. right?

I dont know much about the bronzes. Portrait looks similar to my tiberius & caligula bronzes.

    My only octavian.

I am not sure of the significance of XXXIIII vs XXXIV but it means 34 years as the Chief Priest, and 20 years as Imperator. Dating the coin to year 11/12 AD.

Nice coin Anoob, and no, I don't want to bite your anything!

It seems there are many of us declaring we are going on the wagon for the rest of the year. So far, it's been seven weeks since my last purchase and I'm still having withdrawals. So, just to get a fake fix, I will post an Augustus AS from my own collection:

    AE As
OBV: DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER, radiate head left
REV: S-C either side of large altar, PROVIDENT in ex.
    Rome mint, 22-30 AD
    10.5g, 28mm

I always loved that coin, the reverse reminds me of a fancy New York Chinese restaurant.

Awesome x100 coin ANoob. I always really enjoy coins that you can narrow down a date.

Now you can join us on this hay ride we have going on the wagon!

I have only one Augustus, from that Goldberg mystery lot. There were two more but they've gone to new homes.

Not the prettiest thing but still interesting, a keeper.

I really am surprised how doggy some of these Augustus bronzes got. These coins are rated as "common" but just looking around, anything in decent condition brings big money and seems quite scarce. I would love to see any other Augustus (Octavian) coins you guys/gals might have floating around. Anyone have the same one as me?

I'm still looking for an appropriate Augustus portrait small bronze (as or dupondius) for my collection, but haven't seen anything appropriate in the last few years (literally). Good quality bronzes have become very scarce. My Augustus sestertius:

    AUGUSTUS
    AE Sestertius (25.72 g.) Lugdunum circa 9 - 14 A.D.
CAESAR AVGVTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE Laureate head of Augustus r. Rev. ROM ET AVG Altar of Lugdunum

Wow Ides- Great Augustus, thats one incredible sestertius. Even with the flatness on the reverse and the wear around the ear on the obverse then coin is spectacular and appealing the eye. Kudos my friend.
