I am not sure if this is even a banknote due to the back of the bill being totally blank. The front of the bill is pictured below. I have identified the person pictured as Dr. Sun Yat-sen. I know that this is from China, but I can't find out what it is. Any help in identifying this item (banknote or not) would be greatly appreciated.
It is a provincial 2 cent note and dates to 1938. A note being blank on one side does not have a bearing on whether it is a banknote. Other examples can be seen with early American currency as it was not uncommon for banknotes to be made up into the Civil War with a blank back to reduce production costs.

Actually, the note is from 1949. The Chinese year is 38, but you have to add 1911 to that to get the Western year. http://www.banknotebank.com/note/895979
Thank you. I was coming to the same conclusion. I couldn't find it in my book under 1938. I did an internet search and found one pictured dating 1949, do I was going to look for that in my book.
My roommate from China said the date is 1938 so I went with that. I guess you learn something new everyday.
I just found it on a website that gave its catalog number and said it was in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money Specialized Issues which is why I couldn't find it. That's the one book I have not added to my collection yet, even though it's on my wish list.
If your roommate is from Mainland China, then that might explain it since the old dating system was abolished after the Communists took control in 1949 and he/she might not be familiar with it. However, they still use the old dating system (that starts with 1912 as Year 1) in Taiwan.
