Awesome news! If you're interested in selling it, I'll give you face value plus PCGS slabbing fees...

You should really use a smiley when you do that jester. I was reaching for my mod hat when I read it the second time :)

    Way Cool!!!

Good for you and great for the customer.

One of the reasons so many moderns are scarce is dealers have been telling people to spend them for decades and decades. When they are forced to buy the junk like a roll of '83-P quarters they'll goo straight in the cash register. They'll pay less than face value and then put scarce coins in the cash register.

Less than face??? How does that work, and how can I do this?

So selfish. Couldn't you find a tour bus so we can all go?

Now that was uncalled for. I didn't notice anyone mention her size.

    :D

Cool. Again, what did you pay for it when it "walked into the shop"?

It happens in lots of ways but many times a dealer will tell a customer to just spend some of the coins and the customer will insist on getting rid of "everyting". The dealer will add them in at less than face because it takes effort to spend them, take them to the bank, or give them in change. Many mint sets at many times have bid less than face and even dealers might not notice and pay good money to ship them for 90% of bid.

Many coins often trade at less than melt, less than face, or less than wholesale. Buying coins cheap is easy. The hard part is selling them at a profit.

I was at an auction once where there was so little interest in BU statehood quarter rolls the winner got them all for $10/lot.... Each lot was for TWO rolls! That's the last time I let that happen in front of me.

Dang...unbelievable. Given the assigned grade and rarity of the variety, what do you think one like this could go for at an auction or other sale?

PCGS price guide is $10,000. There is currently one in a PCGS 68 holder for sale in Baltimore at the auction going on this week. That'll be a good barometer for the value of this piece. It doesn't close for a few more days and is currently sitting at $5,000.

  16. The Cheerios variety should hold its low pop status in TPG slabs. If memory serves, only a small percentage of the Saca's that were packaged for the cereal boxes were actually the rare "Cheerios" variety. The experimental variety was never minted for the general public, and can not be found in unsearched rolls or mint sets. Also, we must remember that the variety was not discovered by collectors until long after the promotion ended. Many of these coins were spent soon after the boxes were opened. This differs sharply from varieties like the wounded eagle or mule coins, which could theoretically still be found in unsearched rolls.

Edit: I did not read the whole thread. Just noticed you hit a 68. Wow! You got a winner on your hands. I paid $9400 a few years ago for mine. Congradulations!

Here is this coolest thing this week. This is a neat piece because not only is it super original but the die pair was on it's last leg... the cracks and various die bulges indicate this. This is an R-5 die pairing.
