2014 is almost here, will the Kennedy Half shoot up in price?

With 2014 right around the corner, I was wondering if the Kennedy Half dollars will shoot up in price, since the rumor is the Mint will do something special for the 2014 Kennedy being it will be the 50th anniversary of the coin, my question is, if I decide to go back and collect the complete set from 1964 to date, will the secondary market shoot up next year since we may see a special coin or just the buzz around the Kennedy halves create bloated value? I have a few random dates, but not a complete set and was wondering if I should complete my set prior to 2014 to beat the price jump, if it happens at all.

    Thoughts?

It's very possible that the scenario you describe may take place. It's happened before with other denominations. The trick is to get on board before the crowd starts to notice. Still, I don't see prices getting wildly inflated because there is plenty of product out there in the market place. Just a humble opinion. Your results might vary..... devil.gif

Personally, I don't think it will affect the values across the board for the entire series, but if the Mint hasn't yet made any formal statement about the issuance of a "commemorative edition" (whether circulated or not) I doubt that it will happen. This isn't like 1963 when Kennedy was assassinated and the Mint went into overdrive to get the new coin out.

There almost certainly will be a special Kennedy set next year. The mint sent out surveys with different options to gauge collectors' interest.

The mint director has stated that there will not be a silver eagle anniversary set next year and you know they will want to replace that revenue somehow.

Here is an old Coin World article with some options that they are considering.

Well, after much thought, I decided to go ahead and complete my Kennedy half collection, with a few purchases from eBay and my LCS, I now have 1964-2013 P&D in a Dansco, so if anything released next year artificially pushes the prices of the existing Kennedys up, I will already be done. I have been wanting to do this for a while and now that it is getting closer, it pushed me to finally complete them

I don't think whatever special set the mint release if any for the Kennedy half in 2014 will impact the rest of the sets prices at all. The general public I don't think is going to really care either way. There is now a lot of people that don't even know what a half dollar coin is especially among the younger generations, seeing as they are no longer minted for circulation. If any price increases or flip opportunities exist it will probably be with the special set itself not the existing coins imo.

I've all the P and D's as well (album) but I haven't the heart to cut the proofs out of the proof sets. So difficult. I've freed proof coins before but it's difficult for me to cut loose the Kennedy's from their mint packaging. Oh loathful me........

I recently kicked my Kennedy collection into gear for my Dansco. I hope the mint does somthing cool
for the 50th Kennedy half anniversary, I suggest the following:

1 Silver Proof Kennedy Half at San Fransico
    1 Uncirculated silver Kennedy S

1 Silver Matte Proof Kennedy Minted exclusively at the Denver Mint.
1 Uncirculated Silver D Kennedy Half

1 Reverse proof Silver Kennedy Philadelphia Mint
1 Regular Silver proof Kennedy P Mint
1 Uncirculated Silver Kennedy P Mint

1 Gold Kennedy Half dollar. Same design as the silver and clad counterparts, just a 90% gold Kennedy half dollar in the Proof, Uncirculated, and Reverse proof versions.

Even offering these in platinum would get a lot of collectors attention.

I'm a silver guy so I would do like a PCGS set with the 64 UNCs, a 64 proof, the 76 40%ers, and then the 92-current proofs. Hits all of the higher valued ones and is a relatively short set.

Call it the silver Kennedy series or something.

I thought of the same thing, working on that "set" as we speak. Soon I'll post an update of all my old silver halves.

I don't see this set jumping in value due to next year. Even if they do something special...there are so many Kennedy halves out there that I just don't see them going up that much. I wouldn't put a set together now in the hopes of flipping it for a profit next year.

The set I am doing is for my own personal interest. I still think a 90% gold Kennedy Half dollar would be interesting.

I hope they don't do that, I wont ever be able to afford it! The closest to a gold Kennedy I will ever own is my Avatar.

I agree - not in favor of a gold Kennedy. Just wouldn't seem right to me, besides the fact I could never afford it....

If Congress wanted to recognize the 50th anniversary of the “Kennedy Half Dollar”, there are a few things they could do and generate some funds for the coffers of the US Treasury.

    1. Besides the standard issues, P, D, Clad Proof and Silver Proof the US Mint could issue a silver and clad “W” mint mark example.

    2. Or the US Mint could issue a ten coin half dollar commemorative set for 2014 celebrating the Presidency of John Kennedy. Keep the obverse of the current half dollar (on second thought, go back to the original 1964 obverse design) and the reverse changed to:

    a. The devastated failure of the “Bay Of Pigs”.

    b. The Start of the “Space Race”.

    c. The “Berlin Airlift”.

    d. Marilyn Monroe.

    e. The “Hoover Boys” going after the KKK in Mississippi.

    f. The “Cubin Missile Crisis”.

    g. President Kennedy thumbing his nose to the Federal Reserve by issuing “United State Notes”.

    h. The Presidential motor cage in Dealey Plazaas seen through a rifle scope from the Book Depository.

    i. Little John saluting his father’s casket.

    j. The grave site of President Kennedy with the internal flame being lit.

    Caleb!

Did you intend to say "Cubin" and not "Cuban"?
Did you intend to say "motor cage" and not "motorcade"?

    Whatever.

I'm sure that the US Mint will come up with something to get the flippers all in a tizzy but I don't think it will produce any interest in collecting Kennedy's.

    Or should I say "Kennedies"?

Precedent (ASEs) seems to indicate that the 50th Anniversary "special" coin might be the only one (other than the ones collected for silver content) worth anything. In fact, there's even precedent that it might be the least valuable, if the US Mint makes too many of them... though that part might be impossible with the sheer volume of these in bank rolls.

Edit: Giving this a bit more thought... I think it'd be hilarious if the US Mint decides to make a special set of all Kennedy coins issued for each of the series:

    90% Silver
    40% Silver
    Clad

They could be even funnier about it, and number the sets, similar to the RCM...
